This was my build:

OS: unRAID

Case: Fractal Define R3 (80)

PSU: Corsair 500w (43)

CPU: AMD CPU Athlon II 250 (45)

MB: ASRock 880GM-LE (50)

RAM: 4GB DDR3 1300MHz Dual Channel (43)

Flash Drive: 8GB Corsair CMFVY3-8GB, Flash Voyager USB 3.0

HDD1: 2TB Hitachi cool spin 5k3000 (53)

HDD2: 2TB Hitachi cool spin 5k3000 (53)

I set it up, the fan span, the proccessor seemed like it was running, blue LED came on, flash USB was receiving power as was PC... connected properly to monitor but NO signal.

I can only presume on boards GPU/Mobo was is faulty. I have real problems selecting mobos since supposedley every selection I made before was wrong even though the names were very similar. Therefore I am calling out for some help.

Can someone please suggest to me a new motherboard which works with unRAID and the hardware i already have... from pcworld.co.uk, box.co.uk or scan.co.uk? I'm not advertising.. these are just the only sites which i trust. the store i got the mobo from (crescent electronics are being iffy about accepting the return).

Thank you..

What do you mean by "no signal" ? Are you seeing that on your monitor ? Is it VGA (d-sub) or DVI connected ? According to the ASRock specs your mobo supports both "Dual VGA Output options: support DVI-D and D-Sub ports by independent display controllers". I would assume the DVI would suport either DVI-D (digital) or DVI-A (analog) but that may be your problem.

edit - I just reread the quote above from the ASRock specs. It specifically states DVI-D so you need a DVI cable that supports digital + a monitor that is DVI digital capable if you are not using VGA.

Does your machine issue any P.O.S.T. diagnostics (beeps) ? If so I would go to the ASRock web site and look for help (manual/user guide, FAQs, forum posts or open a tech support ticket).

I personally doubt you need a different mobo but yours could be defective. Will your vendor test it at their shop ? Have you built PCs before ? You might not have a power connector fully seated. You could have a bad stick of RAM - try booting with one at a time. You listed RAM as 1300 - did you mean 1333 ? Here is the list of supported RAM - DDR3 1800(OC)/1600(OC)/1333/1066/800.

Check your CPU socket connection. If your mobo has any overclocking, core unlocking or "turbo" modes turn all of this off until you have a working system.

Once your machine boots successfully you will most likely have to get into the mobo bios to configure it to boot from a flash drive but your PC should post with some diagnostic messages telling you how to enter the bios setup. Try the Delete key, F1 or ESC if you don't know what to use.

Also try stripping everything out, just have ram, cpu and motherboard and see if you can boot that first.

If you can tell us more about what it does that would help.

I've tried everything you guys have mentioned. No beeps (/post).

All the keys on my keyboard light up and stay lit up (the caps lock etc.)

The DVI connections etc. are fine I use the monitor with another similar system I've built.

I find it quite weird too and I'm pretty dissapointed. It could be the RAM but not too sure. I'll test a stick from a working PC to find out. Without RAM, shouldn't I get a sign of POST? did not happen when i tested it.

If no POST beeps, I would assume a hardware problem. Power, CPU, Memory or mobo. I'll ask again, will your merchant test it at his shop ?

Not trying to insult your intelligence or experience, but you do understand the difference between DVI-D and DVI-A, right ? Shouldn't keep it from POSTing but would certainly explain a lack of video display.

Is the 4 pin CPU power cable plugged into the motherboard? that is what it sounds like..

Also try taking the ram out and booting to see if it beeps that it has no ram.

That motherboard doesn't have a built in speaker, so did you hook one up to the header? That may explain the lack of beeps.

I did have a bad MSI 890gxm motherboard once and it also did not have any output. I returned it and the next one worked.

Did you mount your own CPU and HSF?  This can be tricky if you're not used to doing it.  I once had similar symptoms as you and reseated the CPU and everything worked fine.

When I build a new system, I try for the minimalist setup.  Just MB, CPU, 1 stick of RAM, video card (if not on motherboard), and keyboard.  That should be enough to be able to enter the BIOS setup program.

A speaker on the MB is required equipment as far as I am concerned.  Without it, debugging the kind of problem you are having is impossible.

Don't give up to quick.  DOA MBs are rare, as are DOA CPUs.  Bad memory is not that uncommon, but I've never seem memory that was totaly bad so you coudn't even post. Much more likely something isn't plugged in securely or mounted properly.

Good luck!

i did just split the 8pin to 4 pin (didnt realise this)... tried connecting it and nothing still. good catch tho, we did that wrong but it hasn't solved the problem.

dont have a speaker to hook to the header. we're really stumped atm.
