New Unraid Setup without loosing data

Featured Replies

I'm setting up new Unraid server and would like to know the best options available for my use case. I would like to NAS server for storing my media files to run Plex / Sonarr / Radarr and I have plans to store my personal photos. What RAID option would best suite this case? and below is my hardware details.

Z420 MB & Xeon Processor

32 GB RAM

8 TB Old Disk X 1 Nos ( I have data in it and need to backup this and use as my priority disk)

4 TB New Disk x 3 Nos

2 TB NVME Disk

Unraid IS NOT RAID

The 8TB would have to be the parity disk since no data disk can be larger than parity. The other spinners in the parity array, nvme in cache pool.

You could go without parity until you get the data transferred. How old is that 8TB? Are you sure it is in good health?

Do you have a backup of anything important and irreplaceable?

Or...

Just keep that 8TB as backup, assign one 4TB as parity and the other 2x4TB as data, nvme in cache pool.

You can mount the 8TB using Unassigned Devices plugin to transfer its data to the array.

Thanks for your quick response. The 8 TB is one year old and in good condition (Seagate External Disk). I'll be dismounting from the cover and plan to attach in my new Unraid Server. So, from the above answer, I should use 4TB as my parity disk and once the data is moved, I can make my 8TB as parity and move 4TB to standard disk? Please correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks.
