PerpetualZell
Hello All. Newcomer here, looking to build my first unRAID server soon… I am trying to keep well under $700, which I think I’ve done pretty darn well =D. heres the parts list: Case: Tiveco Typhon TYP-001RD 10-Bay ATX Mid Tower Computer Case http://www.amazon.com/Tiveco-Typhon-TYP-001RD-10-Bay-Computer/dp/B0056JAQTU/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I32QRAXPDUBW88&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 CPU: Intel Celeron E3400 Processor 2.60 GHz 1 MB Cache Socket LGA775 http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Celeron-Processor-Socket-LGA775/dp/B00343IO9E/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I3Q8ZZ0WX7100A&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 Mobo: MSI G31TM-P21 LGA 775 Intel G31 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard http://www.amazon.com/MSI-G31TM-P21-Intel-Micro-Motherboard/dp/B002HKHP5Y/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IKYFJQM00OIFH&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 PSU: Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus Series 500W ATX12V V2.3 Active PFC Power Supply http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-eXtreme-ATX12V-Active/dp/B001G0WPLK/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I1UAT9TS5R7174&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 Ram: PNY OPTIMA 2GB (2x1GB) Dual Channel Kit DDR2 800 MHz http://www.amazon.com/PNY-Channel-PC2-6400-Desktop-MD2048KD2-800/dp/B000PVNQLE/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=I2A6R2JNL7EDXL&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 Parity HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 2 TB 3.5-Inch CoolSpin RPM SATA III 6Gbps 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive http://www.amazon.com/Hitachi-Deskstar-3-5-Inch-CoolSpin-0F12117/dp/B004E9SGO0/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=ITIZHLBY9RH7A&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 Data HDD’s: Hitachi Deskstar 2 TB 3.5-Inch CoolSpin RPM SATA III 6Gbps 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive Same As Parity Others: Cooler Master 4 in 3 HDD Module Device Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus 120mm Sleeve CPU Cooler http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Module-Device-STB-3T4-E3-GP/dp/B00129CDGC/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IMEN12E9NN736&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyper-Sleeve-RR-B10-212P-G1/dp/B002G1YPH0/ref=wl_it_dp_o?ie=UTF8&coliid=IK6B7AKOCYHPA&colid=25RM3FBHIJX20 I was curious, should I stick with 2gb of ram or go with the 4gb ram? Also, will the particular mobo I listed work? Link to comment
Johnm
That motherboard only has 10/100 network card. I think you should invest your money in something more modern Link to comment

Rajahal
The PSU you've chosen also has dual +12V rails, meaning that you only have 16A to run all your hard drives. You want a PSU with a strong single +12V rail (how strong depends on how many drives you want to support). I suggest you look at my prototypes thread (link in my sig) for more hardware recommendations. There are a few LGA775 boards in there, such as the Supermicro C2SEE/C2SEA. I also recommend using a single 2 GB RAM stick instead of 2 x 1 GB as it will give you more expansion options in the future. Link to comment
PerpetualZell
Ok, I went back to Amazon, and this board looks promising: GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P http://www.amazon.com/GIGABYTE-GA-EP45-UD3P-LGA-Intel-Motherboard/dp/B001HH2WE2/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312831501&sr=1-12 Its also on the list of supported hardware... ...And from Raj's Prototype Designs I decided on this PSU: Corsair Builder Series CX V2 500 http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Certified-Compatible-Platforms-CMPSU-500CXV2/dp/B004W2T2U6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1312831577&sr=8-1 For Ram, This Looks Promising: Corsair TWIN2X4096-6400C5C 4GB http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-TWIN2X4096-6400C5C-PC2-6400-240-Pin-Channel/dp/B0027P9C9G/ref=dp_ob_title_ce Link to comment
joshpond
2gb of ram is enough unless you plan on running other stuff. Just something basic like the kingston value ram (as long as it is compatible with your mobo) is enough. It'll save you a few bucks. The manufacturer's website will have a list of what is compatible. I would not pay almost $200 after shipping for a used motherboard that is 2 generations behind... Sorry. Link to comment
PerpetualZell
2gb of ram is enough unless you plan on running other stuff. Josh Alright, I'll look around, I have plenty of time, don't plan on purchasing anything till mid September. Ack! I would not pay almost $200 after shipping for a used motherboard that is 2 generations behind... Sorry. Lol, I wasn't planning on buying it from amazon, I would have looked around to find one cheaper somewhere else, I just use amazon as a giant catalog. But if you could advise any fairly cheap boards that take LGA775 chips i'd appreciate it, Much easier than finding one, posting it, waiting on a reply, then finding another if the unRAID pro's tell me its not the best board. Thanks for all the help though, really appreciate it! EDIT: THIS mobo looks promising lol: Gigabyte GA-P45T-ES3G http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GA-P45T-ES3G-LGA-Intel-Motherboard/dp/B004YLE5H0/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1312871088&sr=1-15 Link to comment
