Hi all, I have a portable USB that is encrypted with Veracrypt to backup some files from a Win 10 PC. I can plug it into the unRaid server and mount via unassigned devices but as it's encrypted it won't be recognised. Is there a way to have unRaid either copy the encrypted files as is (I can copy off and unencrypt it at the Win 10 PC when needed) or Have veracrypt on unraid (via Docker or something) and copy the files onto the array unencrypted. Hi all, older machine that I turn on and off occasionally but now considering running full time and looking at options regarding upgrading. I may need to go down that path as some of the HDDs are old. (still some 1.5TB HDDS!) but checking if it will also reduce my power draw. Currently draws around 80w at idle with array spun down (160w spun up): Pentium G4400 Asrock Z170 Extreme6+ (With M1015 x2 or whatever they were) 18 disks in array + 2 constant spin (Docker and VM) and 1x SSD Cache I think AX860 PSU??? or something. 3 Dockers (emoncms openhab & Database one) and 1 VM (Ubuntu Server) Norco 4224 Case with original fans. It all runs fine but thinking of moving to just HDDs off the motheboard (ie 5 array) but what can I expect power wise. I know the cost to upgrade isn't going to be recouped by energy savings but..... Will it be a big reduction? What are people getting? Hope it all makes sense. Thanks, Josh

I think I may have found stability with the Asrock board. I had to turn of turbo and the C1E states (power saving modes) from memory. Josh

I've had a search and read and play around and can't find the answer so: I've just upgraded from 5 with no cache to 6 with an SSD cache and want to use a cache drive purely to transfer files a bit quicker. (no dockers etc) The only thing is I can't seem to find a setting anywhere to add the cache option to the existing shares and also the option to set the mover. I feel like I'm missing something simple here. Thanks josh

Sorry forgot about this for a while. Everything was working for years and stable but it was unraid 4.7/5 inside ESXi. I've just pulled the system apart as I'm planning on going back to stock unraid and having another PC run all my VMs. Trying to get ESXi going again and now it's freezing..... not sure what though as it could be a number of things unrelated to yours. I know there was an issue with the USB3. Josh

Try disabling usb3 or the serial port. I'm out at the moment but from memory there were some irq conflicts as I had the same issue.

1) ESXi boots of a USB and is a little slower but like you said rarely restarts. 2) motherboard should only see ESXI/USB in boot order. unRaid stick shouldn't be there (or further down the list) It should be passed through to the VM and be in the VM's boot order 3) yes, if that is all your motherboard uses is the 3 cards for sata ports then that leaves you MB ones free 4) Shouldn't be a great deal different 5) I've found ESXi the easier to setup vs XenServer. (Not Xen on an OS) 6) Yes yo ucan pass through the MB Sata ports for Ubuntu but mostly the Sata MB ports are used by ESXi and the HDDs are portioned out to the different VMs, like Ubunutu. Unless you need to passthrough the HDD for a specific reason? UnRaid needs it but most others don't 7) Don't know, would have to try it out. With ESXi I've setup mine so that if it fails or when during trouble shooting I can change the boot order on the motherboard to boot off the unRaid flash drive and everything should come back up as normal. That way you should be able to 'test' it. Josh

As above, I'm using plop, that way if I ever need I can still run unRaid bare metal and update easily. Josh

Not sure, here in Australia we only have five channels (lots of sub channels within that), the hdhomerun can record two separate channels and sub channels within that so that is enough for us. I don't mind the idea of unraid/xen but not while it is still in beta and also when currently my ESXi is stable. If you are happy to stick with some of the older ESXi then should be no issue. I also find that the ESXi interface is just nicer and easier at the moment. About the question about passing through motherboard sata ports but not the data store, the motherboard that I'm using does but it is AMD. ASrock 970 extreme4, 5 motherboard ports, passthrough of 4 to unRaid and leaves one for the datastore. I'm not aware of any that do individual sata ports as it is the controller that needs to be passed through. I'm using HDHomerun as a tuner so that frees up PCI slots in the server. Josh

I'm on 5.1 and I pass through my USB to unraid without a problem and also pass through another usb to my windows VM and the UPS usb to an ubuntu server VM. Josh

Take this with a grain of salt as I only installed xenserver and played around with it for a little while, but it seemed easier to create VMs with ESXi. With ESXi you can just select the ISO to boot up from and then start installing. I didn't play around with xenserver enough to test that side of it. The biggest thing holding me back from xenserver (and I don't know if it has been fixed yet) was the inability to pass through the usb along with the GUID which is what unRaid needed to start. You can pass through the whole USB controller instead but I have my unRaid USB, a Z wave stick and the UPS, it would have made passing them through to different VMs more difficult or I may have needed to use some PCI slots for USB controllers. I do this same thing. I can switch to bare metal unRAID if/when I need to without changing the boot order by just pulling the ESXi boot drive. I am still running ESXi 4.1 precisely becuase it is stable for me. No use in rocking the boat on a system that is working. I use a usb for ESXi, the boot up is probably going to be slower but it isn't something that I do all the time. The VMs are on a RAID 0 HDD setup. I'm also running ESXi 5.1 I had some issues with 5.5 but I'm not sure it was with 5.5. I was having some irq issues with the usb 3 controller on my board which I've fixed when I was on 5.1 and I haven't upgraded yet and probably won't since it's pretty stable. Josh

The benefit of dual parity has little to do with protecting against a 2nd failure. It primary provides two major benefits: (1) When a parity error is detected, it's possible to compute exactly where the error is; and (2) when a drive does fail, the system remains fault tolerant during the rebuild -- so a 2nd failure during a rebuild doesn't cause a failed rebuild. Those are MAJOR benefits in improving the overall UnRAID reliability. This becomes more so with the newer large drives. 6TB drive is going to take quite a while to rebuild increasing risk something fails during the rebuild. Plus do you really need more than 24x6TB Josh

Don't forget the cost associated with HDMI to cat and the usb hubs, usb to ethernet adapters. It may all end up costing more than having a client. Josh

Okay since no one is giving this a go here are my thoughts. It should be possible but difficult. You would need to a GPU for each VM for starters so that does make it harder. I'm assuming you are then going to run the HDMI over dual ethernet or something to get video there. Is that something like what you were planning. If you run unRaid in a VM as well it depends on if you are going to add Raid cards as that will take up more PCIe slots. Should be possible but I suspect not too many have tried it. As an aside, having XBMC run on the second monitor constantly should be possible. I can't remember how but on my PC (win 9) I've set XBMC to always open and play on the left monitor. Josh

I have two of these cards supports up to 8 Sata drives. Was part of an unRaid setup. No back plate http://www.supermicro.com/products/accessories/addon/AOC-SASLP-MV8.cfm I bought these new a few years ago. No warranty left and pulled from a working machine. Not sure how much these go for but lets say around $70 ea. They have been flashed to .15 firmware as option ROM was an issue with the motherboard I was running these on. The VMDK does boot faster, but frankly I reboot so little that speed is of little need in this regard. Same, it stays on unless I'm trouble shooting so boot time is nothing. Josh Sent by tapatalk

I still use the plop method and passing through the whole usb. Updating only involves updating the usb and I can always change the boot up to the unRaid usb if I want to go back to bare metal. Josh Sent by tapatalk

Hi All, I'm trying to trouble shoot a pretty complex problem I'm having. Everything is running inside ESXi so I might have to try running vanilla next. I know this might not be the correct forum but here goes. Everything has been working fine until recently. When I'm playing a video file (seems to be larger ones) and copying large amounts (can be large file or lots of little ones) to and from the server sometimes I get freezes. It's random and not always. Reboot seems to fix it for a while. One thing I've just noticed at the moment is that CPU utilisation seems to hit 90-100% when the freeze occurs (unRaid VM only), when it drops everything goes again. (Normally when streaming around 30-50%) Nothing pops up on the syslog. All other utilisations are about the same, all other VMs fairly stable. Is there anything that might cause 100% CPU utilisation?
