Mixing ECC and non-ECC ram

Hi

My unraid PC currently has 2 x 8gb sticks of non ECC ram and i wish to run more VMs so am planning to add another 2 x 8gb sticks. If i buy the new sticks as ECC RAM, will they run in ECC mode or does all the RAM need to be ECC for this to work?

    Short answer: do not mix ECC with non-ECC ram.

    Long answer: If your motherboard supports both, there is the likelihood it would have to be unbuffered ECC ram and you would need the functionality in the BIOS to disable ECC functionality all together. You would not be able to use ECC functionality on some modules and not others.
