MikeL Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 I decided it was about time to upgrade to a newer more efficent Media server and hopefully faster and more powerful. As well as moving into the 5.0 version of UnRAID (Up from 4.5) My thinking is that 8; 3TB, and 1; 1.5TB drives (1 - 3TB Parity, 7 - 3TB Data, and 1 - 1.5TB Cache.) will be cheaper and cooler to run then my existing 14 drive system. (1 - 2TB Parity, 3; 2TB, and 9; 1.5TB Data, and 1; 500GB Cache drives.) The new server will run 5400 rpm drive plus the 5900 cache drive. While the old one runs a mix of 5900, and 7200 rpm drives. Not to mention more storage to start with. Plus cooling should be much improved. My new build should start next weekend! (August 26th) Here are the specs for it. Case - Norco RPC-4224 Motherboard - SUPERMICRO MBD-X8SIL-F-O Xeon X3400 / L3400 / Core i3 series Dual LAN Micro ATX Server Board w/ Remote Management CPU - Intel Core i3 Processor i3-540 3.06GHz 4MB LGA1156 CPU BX80616I3540 Memory - Kingston 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 SATA Expansion Card - 2 X SUPERMICRO AOC-SASLP-MV8 Cooling - 120mm fan wall bracket for RPC-4224, RPC-4220 (Ordered an extra one for my old 4220) 3x Noctua NF-P12-1300 120mm fans (Ordered 6 so I can finally upgrade my 1st server to quite it and cool it.) 2x ARCTIC COOLING ACF8 Pro PWM 80mm Case Fans. (Also two extras for my 4220) Drives - Parity - HITACHI Deskstar 0S03230 3TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Data - 7 HITACHI Deskstar 0S03230 3TB 5400 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Cache I will be using an old 1.5TB WD15EARS OS - UnRAID 5.0b11 Power Supply - CORSAIR Enthusiast Series TX650 V2 650W ATX12V v2.31/ EPS12V v2.92 80 PLUS BRONZE Certified Active PFC High Performance Power Supply Cables - 4x Molex 79576-3007 Mini SAS/SATA Cable (1 Input - 4 outlets) 4x 1m 30AWG Internal Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male to Mini SAS 36pin (SFF-8087) Male Cable - Black Not sure what addons that will be used, any ideas are more then welcome. Please give me your feedback. Thanks Mike
Rajahal Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Looks like a great system! With that much RAM the cache_dirs (directory caching) add-on would be no sweat, I recommend it. I actually want to upgrade my personal server from 2 GB to 4 or 8 GB so that cache_dirs runs better. I also ran all my 3 TB compatibility testing on beta10 and had no issues. I haven't used beta11 yet myself, but the announcement thread seems to indicate quite a few issues with it. beta10 might be more stable, I'm not sure. Browse through both threads and see what you think.
gabbott Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Can unraid even address more than 4gig of RAM at the moment?
prostuff1 Posted August 22, 2011 Posted August 22, 2011 Can unraid even address more than 4gig of RAM at the moment? Of course, if it could not you would not see all these builds with more than for. It uses PAE to address the extra RAM above the 4GB mark.
MikeL Posted August 22, 2011 Author Posted August 22, 2011 Thanks for your reply, and input! I will look into b10, but my thinking was that by the time I was ready for the OS, ( Early -mid September) b11 would be much better. I will cross that bridge when the time comes.
