Network Interface Setup and Changing NICs

Featured Replies

I'm trying to change the NIC that I'm using in Unraid. My motherboard has multiple NICs, one of which is a 10GB ethernet port. It is recognized in the Network Settings page, however I can't get it to do anything...

I have tried porting up the device, and trying to assign an automatic IP, and also setting a static IP. I've also tried changing the interface rules to set the new device as first place, I've tried bonding with my current 1GB connection, as well as bridging, and trying to turn all these off and just use the 10GB connection... Nothing works.

I've now had to delete my network preferences and start fresh because the unraid instance was not accessible over the network. I'm attaching a screenshot of the network settings in its current state. As of right now, eth0 is my working 1GB connection, and eth2 is my not working 10GB connection.

How should I move forward? I really want to get my 10GB connection working, as I've just bought some new SSDs and plan to make a fast ZFS array after I upgrade to 6.12.x (currently on 6.10.3).

There's no link on the 10GbE NIC, so it won't work in the current state:

Link detected: no

First try different cables/switch if possible, you can also test with a different OS to see if it the link goes up, to see if it's not a driver problem.

There's probably no link right now because it's ported down? I will do these tests though.

Can I use my Windows VM via unraid for testing, or would it need to be an OS that's running on bare metal, instead of VM?

You can post new diags after port up.

Yes, as long as you can passthrough the device.

Man I feel dumb... Not really how it happened, but I pulled an ethernet cable from a working setup and plugged it into the 10GB NIC. Nothing was working, as above. I then tested the cable by putting it back into its old setup. Cable was confirmed as working... except it's broken! Or at least unreliable...

I guess the way in which the wire was laying in the working setup allowed it to work, however when laid out for its new setup, there must be something that breaks it. I just switched the cable with a new one that I found in a drawer and everything is working now. I've been able to assign an automatic IP, and now I've changed that to a static IP.

Does it make sense to have both NICs setup, using the 1GB as a fallback in case 10GB fails for whatever reason, or is it just not necessary?

If you have a 10GbE switch I would just use that one, or at least use them as two independent NICs, bonds can some time cause other issues, you can always re-enable the other one if needed.
