February 21, 200818 yr Hi, what does that line mean? I found it in syslog: Feb 21 08:29:24 Tower emhttp[2560]: get_temperature: ioctl (smart): Input/output error Thanks Harald
February 21, 200818 yr In my experience, that message is usually preceded by 6 'exception Emask' type errors, apparently an attempt to get the drive temp from the SMART firmware of the drive. As far as I know, it generally means a failing or damaged drive, at least a failed SMART system for that drive. Can you see a temperature for that disk?
February 21, 200818 yr Author Hi, thanks for your answer. In my experience, that message is usually preceded by 6 'exception Emask' type errors, apparently an attempt to get the drive temp from the SMART firmware of the drive. As far as I know, it generally means a failing or damaged drive, at least a failed SMART system for that drive. Can you see a temperature for that disk? I see the messages for several disks (sdi shown below): Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower kernel: [75089.758630] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdi] 1465149168 512-byte hardware sectors (750156 MB) Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower kernel: [75089.758684] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdi] Write Protect is off Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower kernel: [75089.758687] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdi] Mode Sense: 00 3a 00 00 Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower kernel: [75089.758731] sd 7:0:0:0: [sdi] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower emhttp[3336]: get_temperature: ioctl (smart): Input/output error Feb 21 15:39:11 Tower emhttp[3337]: get_temperature: ioctl (smart): Input/output error These are all brand-new Samsung 750GB HD753LJ. They do show temperature only at the MoBo ports. Attached to the Promise controllers they fail. sdi is a drive attached to one of the Promise cards. Is there a way to get them to work with Promise controllers? I can't believe that brand-new hardware (2 weeks) doesn't do S.M.A.R.T. properly. Regards Harald
February 21, 200818 yr I really like the Samsung drives (quiet, very fast, *claims* to be cooler), but I have noticed that the smartmontools package (used to be available on the unRAID download page) would show 2 special options only for Samsung drives, 2 patches or workarounds for non-standard or buggy responses from the Samsung firmware. Those Samsung options may not apply to these just-released drives, but it is perhaps indicative of their often non-standard or buggy implementations. You might try some research online for your model HD753LJ, check for others reporting problems, does not sound good...
February 21, 200818 yr Author I really like the Samsung drives (quiet, very fast, *claims* to be cooler) I can confirm that. They stay cool - even after writing 300GB. Sitting next to some WDs they report at least 5 degrees less than the WDs. The WDs report higher values even if they have nothing to do and the Samsungs are burning ;-) However, it's bad if they don't work properly at my Promise controllers. Regards Harald
