unraid on QNAP TS-h973AX

Hi all,

I would like to install unraid on my left over QNAP TS-h973AX, it has 8 cores and 32gb of ram, so should run quiet ok.

Hence I can't get it working, I have a decommissioned and not used USB Stick from my old unraid build but just can't seem to make it boot from.

I have some usb-c to hdmi adapter on the usb-c port, but that does not work either.

has anybody made some experience with those boxes and unraid in the past and found a ay to get this working?

I woul dgladly appreciate any hint.

I have another QNAP model (cheap one with 2 drivers). Unfortunately your model does not have an HDMI ouput. Try to use another USB 3.x stick

Did you manage to get Unraid running on the  TS-h973AX?

Anyone that succeeded. I have the same TS-h973AX model which has no display port nor console one.

I finally got a DOM and an USB adapter that allowed me to mount it on my mac and write the Unraid image on it. Still, sadly the qnap did not boot (or at least it did not grab an IP address). I did not run the script to make the stick bootable with old non EFI bioses but apparently I will have to try as EFI alone was not enough.

I was told by someone yesterday (and could not believe it) that you don't need to do anything other than insert an Unraid flash drive into one of the back usb ports of the TS-h973AX. Today I can confirm this from own experience. No opening the case, messing with the glued DOM or getting into the BIOS by means of a tty port header on the MB. It just booted and runs fine so far. I had usual issues with the Unraid USB Creator and a new 64GB Sandisk, so prepared the Sandisk with Rufus to have it formatted with 'large FAT32' making it a non-bootable. Then just copied the unzipped 7.0.1 download onto it. Maybe avoiding the USB Creator is part of the 'magic' but that's what I felt seeing the GUI appear.

The TS-h973AX DOM appears as Dev1, best left alone ofc. If you'd pull the Unraid Flash drive it will boot into QuTS again...... But why...?

Currently copying my media back onto the RAIDZ1 I created on Unraid;-)

Regard,

R.
