can't delete an old share

Featured Replies

i have a user share that i no longer need and i want to delete.  I deleted all the files from the share and when i go into the web management utility and go to shares - i go to the share i want to delete and delete all the info from all the fields and click apply.  the page refreshes and the share is still there.  so what am i doing wrong?  how can delete this old share?

anyone??

Hey, it's me again, about to ask more of the obvious!  It comes from all my tech support experience, starting with the obvious (is it plugged in, etc etc).  I probably should have asked last time what you had already tried, and saved us both some time.  But here goes, another question about the obvious (with my apologies):

After deleting the files, and the share configuration info, did you also delete the associated top level folder from ALL of the disks?  I believe it is the existence of top level folders that establishes user shares.

no i didnt do that - i dont have my disk shares enabled.  so you are sayign that i should enable the disk shares and then go to disk 2 and 7 for example and delete the old share folder from those disks.  then disable the disk shares again and go try to delete my old share again?

If a "top level" folder exists on any disk-share, it will automatically be created as a user-share.

If a "top-level" folder exists on NO disk-share, no corresponding folder will be created as a user-share.  ;)

So, stop the array, enable disk-shares, perform whatever steps you need to manage their hierarchy (moving, deleting, or adding folders) and then your user-shares will have the corresponding "top-level" folders.  You can disable or hide the disk-shares once everything is configured the way you want.

ok cool - i will give that a shot tonight.

When removing a share, s/w will delete all the same-named directories on any disk it's on.  There must be another reason why your share can not be deleted - perhaps a hidden file?

there shouldnt be any hidden files or anything.  from my vista system which is set to show all hidden and system files, i went to the the share pressed ctrl+a to select all files and deleted them.

EDIT: i stand corrected - i just checend and although it was set to show hidden files, it was nto set to show protected system files.  so i change that and found that thre were a bunch of system files in there like desktop.ini.  deleted those and now i can remove the hare.  thanks for the help!!
