December 10, 20232 yr I recently upgraded my main pc and now have a 5800x laying around. I'm in the process of moving my unraid server from an old pc case to a rack mounted case and while everything is going to be transferred over, I was wondering if it would be worth using my 5800x and retiring my 6700k. I would need to purchase a new am4 motherboard and some ram as well (not sure what would be best here either). I use the server for plex (with a 2080 super), 10ish docker containers, file storage, and 2-3 VM's. I guess I'm wondering if the juice is worth the squeeze for my use case. Any insight on this would be appreciated. Thanks!
December 11, 20232 yr This is a question that is always difficult to answer, as it depends not on what you are running on your server, but how you are using the Dockers and VMs. How many simultaneous users are watching video on Plex? Is a single VM spun up occasionally, or are several run at a time? It is more about the burden on your current 6700k. If it is overworked and you are seeing issues, then the 5800X will certainly be an improvement. This is a question only you can best answer. The downside of upgrading is losing the iGPU (which you may not be using) and the cost for new hardware. The upside is doubling your core count and overall speed, as well as moving your need to upgrade several years further down the road as the 6700k is several generations old. It really a question of current system performance and your willingness to invest in your server.
