How can I permanently and correctly add the Slackware package "detox" to unRAID?

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I am completely new to unRAID and Slackware, though I have general Linux experience.

I want to install detox to my unRAID server, it is a little command line tool to change tricky characters in filenames:

Detox is a utility designed to clean up filenames. It replaces difficult to work with characters, such as spaces, with standard equivalents. It will also clean up filenames with UTF-8 or Latin-1 (or CP-1252) characters in them.

I found there are Slackware packages available: http://slackbuilds.org/result/?search=detox&sv=

Now I looked around the forum and Wiki and while there is a lot of information, I really hesitate because I do not want to destroy my new and so far well running unRAID installation.

Surely it can not be very difficult to add a Slackware package and maybe someone can point me in the right direction or provide me with the necessary steps to do this correctly?

I guess I am not the only one struggling with tricky characters in filenames, so this might be beneficial to others, detox is a very good tool to deal with this.

Thanks in advance!

The easiest way to do it is to create a folder on your flash drive called "extra" and place the .txz/tgz file in there and reboot.  The package should get installed on every reboot.

If you give me about 1 hour I can create an unMenu package manager plugin for this without to much issue since there appears to be slackware packages for it.

EDIT: it will be more than an hour.  The only .txz/tgz file I could find was for a very old version of slackware.  I would have to build/make a newer slackware package, which is doable just more time consuming.

Thanks a lot!

I have not yet tried it - SlackBuilds has two version, does it matter which one I choose?

An unMenu package manager plugin would be greatly appreciated of course :)

- I have just seen your edit. Are the files in the SlackBuilds link above not the correct ones?

Maybe I misunderstood, but the current version seems to be 13.37 and a detox Slackware package for that version seems to be available here: http://slackbuilds.org/repository/13.37/system/detox/

But as I said I have no idea how things are handled in Slackware land :)

There are BUILDS available, but no ready made .tgz/.txz file that I could find easily.  That means either you build it yourself using the slcakbuild or use a 1.0 version that I found for slackware 10.X

Make a slackware package should not be overly difficult, just takes some time.

Aha! Ok I understand that now, thanks for clarification!

OK, I have been able to compile detox 1.2 on a 5.0b12 system after I added quite a few packages.

I will see about packaging it up into a slackware installable package and then may contact you to test on your system.

Out of curiosity was is your hardware breakdown?

Hi sorry for the late reply, I have been busy.

A package usable on unRAID would be great, thank you very much!

My hardware is Asus M4A78LT-M, Athlon II x2 240e CPU, 4GB RAM, two Seagate 2 TB drives and one WD 2 TB drive, do you need to know more? Oh and I'm running unRAID 4.7.

Thanks again!
