MassCool PCI-E X1 card

Featured Replies

The card looks like a good deal, BUT...

Some of us have Sil3132-based cards, and they work fine with unRAID, very fast, PCI Express, SATA II, and with port multiplier support for the future (with adapter can connect up to 5 drives per port).  MassCool has been around for a little while, making inexpensive cooling accessories and drive enclosures for PC's, reputation is average.

Unfortunately, I'm almost positive that the Sil3132 chipset supports 2 ports only.  In fact, I think the last digit is the number of ports, just like the Sil3114 is the 4 port version of the 2 port Sil3112.  And when I see the bank of jumpers on this card (somewhat unusual for a SATA card), I suspect they are for determining which 2 ports you can actually use.  I suspect you can either have 2 internal or 2 external or perhaps 1 internal plus 1 external.  Someone will have to confirm this, I could be all wrong.  It's still a very good deal, and that gives you a very flexible card to use.

One caution, with a similar card, I have had a SATA cable slip off the internal SATA connector.  I doublecheck these connectors every time, just before closing the computer case, if I have to work inside.

So its back to the drawing board for me.  I need a card that has at least 4 available ports.

My motherboard has 3 x1 slots, and 1 x16 slot and 3 regular PCI.  I could get the old standy by SX4 card, or the Supermicro one, but I just can't bring myself to purchase a regular PCI card for this purpose.

This card might work.

Has anyone had any luck with another PCI Express card, they would like to tell me about?
