Setting up a cache drive

Featured Replies

When i set up my server I didn't have a cache drive, I have just added one and want it to be used for dockers etc.

I think i have managed to move over appdata, domains, isos and system to the cache drive with mover, but i'm unsure of the settings i should choose.

On the share page there's a yellow triangle alerting me to 'some or all files unprotected'.

I have the files set to, primary storage cache, secondary storage array and mover action, array to cache.

Are the files only stored on either the array or cache? I thought by selecting a secondary storage they would be on both array and cache therefore being backed up. If they are only stored on either why bother with a secondary storage?

Do i need a second cache drive to create a pool and have them mirrored? Then not bother with secondary storage on the array.

Confused

Thanks

Secondary storage is only for overflow. When cache gets below its Minimum Free setting, new files will go to the array instead. Files are not in both places.

That is how you get the yellow triangle to go away.

Attach Diagnostics to your NEXT post in this thread so we can check how you have things setup.

Thanks for that.

So if my cache drive were to go kaput, what would i loose? Would the system boot?

All I have running is 2 docker containers, duckdns and jellyfin. Obviously they would stop working.

The Unraid OS doesn't install to any of your storage. The OS is contained in archives on the boot flash drive. These archives are unpacked fresh at each boot into RAM, and the OS runs completely in RAM. Think of it as firmware.

The boot flash also stores all of the settings from the webUI (your configuration) so these can be reapplied at boot. You must always have a current backup of flash.

Your configuration includes the settings you made for each container on the Add Container page when you install or edit the container. These settings can be used by the Previous Apps feature on the Apps page to reinstall your containers exactly as they were. But...

Your appdata (the working storage of each of your containers) is on your disks somewhere, typically on cache or other pool. Without its appdata, a container application will be starting from scratch.

The Appdata Backup plugin will let you backup your appdata.

I will take a look at your diagnostics and comment in my next post.

Ideally, your appdata, domains, and system shares would all be on cache or other fast pool with nothing on the array, so Docker/VM performance won't be affected by slower parity, and so array disks can spin down since these files are always open.

These shares are configured correctly, but your appdata has some files on disk2.

Nothing can move open files. You have to disable Docker in Settings before mover can move these.

Also, mover won't replace files, so if something exists in both places you will have to decide which to keep.

You can see how much of each disk or pool is used by each user share by clicking Compute... for the share on the User Shares page.

Dynamix File Manager plugin will let you work directly with files and folder on your server.
