Which File System for Large Uncompressed files?

Featured Replies

Hello,

i had my Unraid Server running for a long time now, just as main Backup Storage (xfs). Now i want to Store large Automotive Firmware Files on it. These arent compressed.

I tought about Compressing in Real Time with an ZFS File system. Or maybe stay on xfs for the main pool and compress the Files on my Cache drive? Its an all SSD server, with 32GB Ram and an 8 Core i7 5960x.

Looking forward to your recommendations.

Are the files compressible? You can test with zip or tar.

Yes they are :)

Zfs would be the best for compression, though there's currently a write performance issue when used in the array, pools are not affected, btrfs would be the next best option.

And how about Compressing on the Cache drive and then Copy them to an BTRF Array?

Regarding the compression it would be the same as writing directly to a btrfs array, since it would be decompressed by zfs and recompressed by btrfs.
