Power System Down (and Up when needed)

Recommended Posts

I have a system running with my old PC with a few HDD and SSDs. The system uses about 40 - 50 WATT currently that sums up with the german power supply costs over time.
Currently, i use unraid as a NAS from time to time, so i don't need the system for days at all.

Is there a setting or a docking container or anything that powers the system down to a minimum when in idle and powers the system up, when it is required like access a share or the scheduler starts to calculate parity or whatever happens?
So there is a little delay until the required data is available but that would be fine.

It would be good to save some power when the system is not required.

You can set the spindown for the drives when they are idle which saves some power.

if your system can support Wake-on-LAN then you might be able to have the system completely powered off most of the time and just woken up when needed if you are prepared to wait for several minutes as it powers up.
