XFS to ZFS Migration - Disk Sizing Question

Featured Replies

Running low on space, so time to buy some new drives. Current setup is 6x Seagate 6TB SAS drives, and 4x WD 14TB SATA drives (2 of the WD drives are used in dual parity).

Recently upgraded all of my rack to 10G, so I'm thinking of taking the plunge and moving everything over to ZFS for the throughput benefits, following the Spaceinvaderone tutorials with Unassigned Drives and Unbalanced to do this. I'd run two pools, one with the 6TB drives, and another with the 14TB drives.

Question is, do I need to buy the exact same model number of WD 14TB drives (shucked them 4 years ago, so I'm guessing they're different in the enclosures now, though I still see some used ones for sale on eBay) to increase the pool, or will any 14TB drive do? If any, can I use different manufacturers as long as they are 14TB in size?

Thanks.

No, but for best performance try to get similar disks, e.g., if the current ones are 7.2k rpm get the same.
