Windows VM freezing issue

Recommended Posts

I've been trawling through all the VM threads and am a bit lost as there is so much information and it's difficult to tell what is still relevant and what is not.  I have my Win10 VM up & running, and it works well, albeit without any audio which isn't a big issue, except for the freezing.  I can use it for about 10 minutes and it freezes.  Thing is, if there are downloads or data transfers happening, I can see that these still work and will complete, and I don't lose access to the VM, but my mouse and keyboard have no input in the VM, so I'm forces for 'force stop' the VM and start it again.    I found the topic below, but it seems like a different issue as I don't see any of the 16 vCPU's pinned at 100% util.  However, I do notice that the allocated CPU's allocated to the VM are busy being used even when the VM isn't running.  Is there a thread that I can read which is relevant and not out of date?

I found this one too, but when I tried the solution, Unraid couldn't see the NVME cache where the VM is running so that doesn't work.  Seems like running a VM would be table stakes, but it's definitely trickier than I was expecting.

The diagnostics should be a single zip file.  The wall of files you have posted look like the individual files that are the contents of the diagnostics zip file - please post the single zip file as it is much easier to work with.

It won't let me.  If I select the zip file it will only take me down to the next level of the file structure and will only allow me to attach all those files, in Finder anyways.  Even if I drag & drop the zip file, it automatically unpacks it and flattens a it.

There is definitely a way to do this as we regularly have MacOS users posting the single diagnostics zip file.    I might try to bring up a macOS VM to see if I can get the more detailed steps.

Just tested in a macOS VM.   When I selected the diagnostics option in Unraid it downloaded a single zip file.   I then opened up 'Downloads' and I could see it there as a single file (although it looked a bit like a folder from the icon).    I could then drag/drop this onto a forum message to attach it.  What you must NOT do is try and open up that zip file

@Bmalone
Mac user here - it looks like you are trying to add an already-unzipped FOLDER to the post. Note that "Kind' is Folder, not zip archive. Are you using Safari? There is a setting which is likely enabled which automatically unzips downloaded zip files. In Safari's Preferences -> General -> Uncheck Open "safe" files after downloading. You can either re-download the file with the correct settings, or just zip your existing diagnostics folder by right clicking it and selecting "compress".

@itimpi

Would love to get this resolved as I too am experiencing performance difficulties with Win10 VM on NVME passthrough. Win10 VM on VDisk is totally fine. I have been running my Win10 NVME Passthrough VM for years with no difficulties, but something changed at 6.12.8. I have reinstalled windows 10 on my NVME passthrough VM just to be sure it wasn't the OS.

Performance is normal enough directly post-boot but CPU idle is high at ~20%. Eventually, intermittent stuttering leads to unusable lagging and I have to force a reboot. Failure seems to be brought about more quickly if I load up demanding applications. The configuration on my VDisk VM is otherwise identical and performs flawlessly.

Will post diagnostics if there is bandwidth for resolving this. Please let me know what state the VM should be in before I extract diagnostics. Thanks!
