Hey guys i have been reading this forum for some time and decided to build a server off of all your recommendations that I have read.

Well I get the server all built and I was going through my BIOS setup and I ran into a snag.

The bios is detecting the 4 sata drives on the mobo, but i cant seam to get the other 8 off of the AOC-SLAP-MV8 to be detected.

Please help.

This is what I have.

I am cuurently running Unraid basic.

I Only have 2 wd drives at the moment. one is a wd20ears and the other is a wd20earx

I do not think the PC BIOS can detect the drives on SAS controller

at the point where you get into BIOS setup your PC does not even know the controller exists.

what is your problem exactly?

if you need to configure drives on the controller ,  after you are done with your PC BIOS  you will need to get into the SAS card BIOS (yes it has it's own BIOS).

I think you need to look carefully during boot up  until message hit "Del"  or "Ctrl + M" to get into BIOS setup appears

but make sure it happens after the SAS card is found, I think you will see the info just like you see it for video cards

but search on this forum for more info

Okay I checked the BOIS of the card and all the drives show up. I was under the impression that they would show up in the MOBO bios also. I am a newb so correct me if I am wrong.

Also when I am running my Unraid checks the sata on the card do not show up. is this normal.

Thanks again for all the help.

does unRaid see your cards?

if not, you might need help installing drivers for them.

this is beyond my knowledge as I do not use SAS cards yet.

search the forum for the cards models or wait until some one can help you here ,  sorry

as for "I was under the impression that they would show up in the MOBO bios also" ...

consider your self corrected  :P

your MOBO BIOS is loaded before the expansion card is recognized. only a certain hardware (such as video(very limited functionality), some HDD controllers, and network controllers(not all as far as I know)) can be recognized during BIOS load

everything else is dependent on how advanced the hardware you plug in into MB and your MB BIOS.

so it is reasonable to see that  MB does not show drives connected to SAS card in BIOS.

that is why this cards have their own BIOS. so they can manage the HDD connected to them as needed and simply pass through the information to and from.

good lick with you setup...

maybe I will learn something  as well when you  get a solution

You won't see the hdd connected to the supermicro card in the bios, they show up in the bios of the supermicro card which loads after the mobo bios.

Sorry not quite sure what you mean here.......

If you mean that you can't see the sata ports on the supermicro card, I notice that you only have 2 drives so if they are  plugged into the mobo you won't see the empty sata  ports on unriad.

if not, you might need help installing drivers for them.

Linux systems don't run on drivers like windows that y ou can just install. They are usually part of the kernal and modding that is above my paygrade.

This is what I get when I check for the sata drives, Looks to me that it is only seeing the 2 I have in the tower.

Correct me if i am wrong, but you stated that you only have 2 drives.

So you should only see 2 drives?

if the answer is anything other then yes, you should post a syslog.

I posted the log in my first post.

I was uder the inmpression tat unraid would see all of the satas even though i only have two hdd installed.

where did you get that idea  :o :o :o :o

no OS sees an empty SATA ports or any other connector that have nothing plugged in into it.

the only way OS can see hardware is if there is a signal comming form the hardware saying "hi,  how are you.  guess what I am here  ::) ::)"

That is as it should be. If you want to test that the supermicro is working plug one drive in to the mobo and one on the controller card. That is about all you can do with just two drives.
