I noticed this guy came down in price recently: http://www.amazon.com/APC-Back-UPS-BX1000G-1000VA-Tower/dp/B0034KO59U

I just wanted confirmation this is supported with the APCUPSD plugin so I can shutdown my unraid server in a power outage.  Can't find a list of compatible devices anywhere.  Also curious to know if it could also power my iMac long enough to shut it down as well?  My unraid system is 6 green drives on a 430W power supply...thanks for the help guys!

Get a Kill-A-Watt (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882715001), you'll end up using it on more than just your Unraid.  This will give you a better idea of how long you'll be able to run on battery more accurately anyway.  As for the backup, "APCUPSD" is the APC UPS Daemon, so, it's very likely one of the two versions should work just fine with that.

I prefer "Pure" Sine Wave wavelength based UPS's myself, though, especially since I have a PFC power supply in my server.  But many have run none sinewave types with success (though it does usually create an unnerving hum in the computers power supply -- that is if it's a PFC which most are today, the 430w you have -may- not be PFC).  I'd rather not oscillate my power supply though :)

Here is what I use and it works effortlessly with APCUPSD, I didn't have to tweak the settings at all.  So far, three power failures and one brown out, still all working strong:  http://www.amazon.com/CyberPower-CP1500PFCLCD-Pure-Sine-1500VA/dp/B00429N19W/ref=pd_cp_e_3

I personally use the APC BR1000G and BR700G UPS's to protect my home theater system and my unRAID/Win7 system.  Both are great products, and as reliable as can be.  Neither are 'pure' sine wave models, but from the research I've done that doesn't seem to be an important factor.  Good quality power supplies, such as those by Corsair, Seasonic, and Antec, are capable of detecting the type of power being put into them and adjusting accordingly.  I have not noticed any noises coming from my power supplies, but the UPSs themselves will make some noise when running off the battery.

Both are fully compatible with APCUPSD, as I believe all APC and most CyberPower UPSs are.  While the server will be able to talk to the UPS and shut down properly, I'm not so sure about your iMac.  As far as I know, all the software produced by APC and CyberPower is Windows-only, so I don't know if there's anything available for MacOS.  It is theoretically possible to configure your server to send a power down command to your iMac when it is shutting down, but that will take some custom scripting and may be a bit difficult.  Do some google research and see if anyone has already written a script like that.
