ohotos Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 I just put in a fifth 2TB drive (Seagate SATA ST32000542AS) in my Unraid server running 5b14 and I noticed when preparing the preclear that it was detected as IDE, not SATA. Is this something I should worry about? I have started the preclear, will I have to change some setup and do it again? I just find it strange that it's detected as IDE and not SATA, but if it doesn't make a difference I'll just leave it that way. Syslog: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3114797/syslog-2011-12-05.txt

Syslog: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3114797/syslog-2011-12-05.txt You have configured the SATA controller in your BIOS to emulate an IDE drive. You need to change the BIOS option. Typically, the correct option is called AHCI. (The BIOS option is there since older Microsoft OS had no SATA drivers. If they did not provide an emulation option, there would be no way to load Win-XP.) No, you will not have to do anything to preclear the drives again. at worst, you might have to re-assign the drives to their respective slots in the array after you change the BIOS setting. It does make a difference, since the emulation mode is typically slower than native SATA mode.
adammerkley Posted December 6, 2011 Posted December 6, 2011 It could also be that only the first 4 SATA ports on your mobo operate in AHCI, while the rest operate in emulation. I had a Gigabyte board with 6 onboard SATA ports. To make the 5th and 6th port work, the entire SATA controller had to be put into emulation mode.
ohotos Posted December 6, 2011 Author Posted December 6, 2011 I have set to AHCI in the BIOS, maybe it's true that that only applies to the first four drives. Will check what other options I have in the BIOS settings. Another problem I have is that whenever I add a drive Unraid won't boot anymore, even though I check and make sure that the boot option in bios are correct. The way I worked around this when adding the last drive is I powered down the drive (switch on drive bay), waited until unraid boot screen appears and then quickly powered up while unraid starts booting. Could this lead to the wrong driver being loaded?
ohotos Posted December 6, 2011 Author Posted December 6, 2011 My BIOS was set to AHCI, however I just disabled SATA IDE combined mode and when I rebooted the drive was recognized correctly. Thanks
