March 25, 200818 yr I am new to unraid, I have an athlon xp 2600 with 2 drives in it with no parity drive currently. I am moving files around on the drive and it seems to move files on the same drive between directories very slow, is this normal? I am moving 8 gig large video files and the transfer rate is only 3.36 MB/Sec. This is an ultra ata 133 drive. I am accessing this through the network share on my vista box, does that make a difference? Thanks John
March 25, 200818 yr It could be Vista which has horrible file transfer speeds unrelated to unraid. Get SP1. You should also post your syslog. Search the board for instructions on how to do that. Bill
March 25, 200818 yr Also, moving files within Windows Explorer has all the data flowing from the unRaid server to the windows client and then back to the unRaid server. This is never fast, even without the slow performance of Vista being involved. Joe L.
March 25, 200818 yr Author JoeL how else can I do this? I am searching for how to post my syslog now. Thanks guys.. John
March 25, 200818 yr Download "PuTTY" to your PC. Use it to "telnet" to your media server. Once you log on as root, type "mc" and invoke midnight commander. It is similar to an old style dos file commander. Use it to move your files on the unRaid server. the files are on /mnt/disk1,2,3,... The links on /mnt/user should automatically keep in sync on unRaid 4.3 if you use the Vista telnet client the mouse will not work in midnight commander. If you use PuTTY as the telnet client, it will. Joe L.
March 25, 200818 yr Author NLS, Unfortunatly I am not very well versed in linux. Ok I have my syslog but it is almost 3 meg so I cannot attach it here, is their anything specific I am looking for in it? Also moving the files accessing the shares from a win xp box cut 20 minutes off the transfer time. Wow!
March 25, 200818 yr Author Ah so that is the "MC" NLS was talking about. I already have putty so I will learn a bit. I used that to get the syslog after I noticed vista does not install telnet by default anymore. John
March 25, 200818 yr Author OK Typing mc gets me a -bash: mc: command not found Sorry i am a linux noob...... I did a lot of work in dos in the old days though.
March 25, 200818 yr Moving any size file or group of files from one location to another on the same physical partition should only take a few seconds, if done correctly. I regularly move 10's and 100's of gigabytes between folders in just a few seconds, using Total Commander (a double-pane file manager) on a WinXP box. It does not appear that your method of moving the files accounted for the common physical drive, and I don't know if that is the fault of Vista, or the file manager you used, or something else. Is it possible that you used 2 different mapped drives to different folders on that disk? That would confuse the file manager, and it would revert to physically moving the whole file. As others have said, you can ensure that it uses the quick move method by using the MC tool or using the Linux mv command, similar to the DOS move command. On my WinXP machine, I opened 2 Explorer windows, and using right-drag and click on Move here, was able to successfully and quickly (less than a second) move a 500MB file. Edit: I should have said that the file moves I mentioned above were of files on my unRAID server.
March 25, 200818 yr Author .........Is it possible that you used 2 different mapped drives to different folders on that disk? That would confuse the file manager, and it would revert to physically moving the whole file......... I AM AN IDIOT ! This is why I am home sick from work today, the cold meds have my brain in a fog. I was moving the files between mapped shared on the windows box causing all the data to be moved accross the network. opening up \disk1\directory 1 and \disk1\directory2 results in an almost instant transfer of the files. Now if I could only figure out what I am doing wrong with the midnight commander thing......LOL Thanks everyone ! John edit to add: and JoeL even mentioned this eariler and the meaning of it got past me for the moment.....
March 25, 200818 yr What version of unRaid are you running? You posted in the 4.3 forum area, and I am pretty sure mc is now part of most recent the 4.3-beta release. If you are running an earlier version of unRaid, you will need to install mc. Joe L.
March 25, 200818 yr Author Joe L, You got me again. I am sorry for being so careless, I am usually more attentive to detail. I must be the meds ( the cough medicine has codine in it ) I ASSUMED and it got me in trouble, I downloaded my version 4.2 on the 13th and I now see that 4.3 was released the next day. So I thought I was running the most recent version but it seems like the updates come fast around here. I will be more careful next time before I post. Thank you again for taking the time to help me! John
March 25, 200818 yr Cool... just download the 4.3-beta ... unzip on your windows box, Visit \\tower\flash in windows explorer. move the existing bzimage and bzroot to bzimage42 and bzroot42 on your flash (so you can easily revert by re-naming them back if needed) Copy the new bzroot and bzimage fro where you unpacked them to your flash drive and reboot. (only those two files are needed to upgrade) You will then be upgraded to 4.3-beta3, and have "mc" Sometimes releases are not so quick and have many months between, your timing was just perfect.... (hope you feel better soon) Joe L.
March 25, 200818 yr Author Done, That is a nice easy little interface, I was not expecting anything GUI I was expecting a command line interface. Thanks Joe, It sucks being sick but it gives me time to play with the server. John
