Boltron Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Hi, I plan on rolling out a new server. It will be a Supermicro (MBD-X9SCL-F-O LGA) motherboard with a PCIe (AOC-SASLP-MV8) RAID controller. My disks are mostly WD Green with a few Black and a Seagate or two. I am planning on adding ~10 drives in total. I am using the NAS in a Windows environment primarily as storage of movies for my HTPC. Also it will be used for general storage of other misc/backup files. Finally, I am new to unRAID but have extensive knowledge in storage and computers in general. So my question, should I go with v4.7 or v5 beta14? I have read that v5 supports WD Green drives out of the box with no special jumpering. Any advice will be most welcome.
husky55 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Read the announcements thread about beta releases and various feedback on each one of them. If you need 3TB support then 4.7 won't do. There is also a thread on 5b6 stable release. I am torn myself but I rarely want to update my server with beta release, just have to much data on it and copying takes like forever.
kingpin Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 i always update to the latest beta and have never had a problem. if you are worried about losing your data then i would recommend backing it up twice, if it is stuff you can replace (movies, music, etc) then use the betas and leave feedback. the only way the betas become stable is when the bugs have been worked out. if people don't test the betas then the bugs won't be found and the we won't get to a stable release.
Boltron Posted December 19, 2011 Author Posted December 19, 2011 Thanks for the replies. I will go with the beta. If it was an early beta I wouldn't but as this is beta 14 I feel pretty comfortable about it.
dgaschk Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 4.7 does not require jumpers on WD Green drives.
Johnm Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 for a new user, especially if you have no macs or *nix boxes, I would stick to 4.7. it is stable with the hardware you listed. You do not need to jumper the WD drives in 4.7 (as already mentioned) once you become comfortable with unraid, maybe then you might want to consider some add-ons. Then possibly moving to a beta version if you have need to for an app or hardware that requires a beta. small steps can help keep your data safe and give you a good learning curve.
