Split Level question

Featured Replies

Hi, I am looking for some advice on a new setup. I will be using unRAID primary as a media server for my HTPC. I organize my media collection as follows:

Movies

Movie1

Movie2

.

TV Shows

TV show 1

TV show 2

.

Documentaries

Doc 1

Doc 2

.

My Level 1 User Shares will be Movies, TV Shows and Documentaries.

I would like each Share to have access to all disks as a single name space. I plan to use High Water as the Allocation method and Min. Free Space to 50GB.

Finally, I don't care on what disk each specific Movie, TV Show or Doc folder lives but I do want each folder to reside on a single disk and not span disks.

So, my question. I believe my Split Level should be set to 2. Is this correct?

yes

No.

Movies = 1

TV Shows = 1 to keep whole series on a disk or 2 to keep each season on a disk.

Documentaries = 1

Hmmm, let me try and clarify further.

Take movies for example. I would like a top level Movies share. I will then copy my movies into it. Each movie is contained in its own folder.  So if I map/open the Movies share on the network, I would expect to see a list of folders such as:

Movie 1

Movie 2

Movie 3

.

Since my movies far exceed the capacity of any single disk in the array, they will need to be stored on a few disks. So, I expect to see movies folders under a top level Movie (Level 1) folder on say 3 disks. This is fine. I however don't want any individual movie folder to span across two disks because during playback there will be pauses as unRAID would need to spin up another disk at some point during playback.

Does this make sense?

Yes. Still 1.

Perfect, thank you.

Otherwise to do spil level 2 you would want something like this

Media

Movies

  Movie1

  Movie2

TV Shows

  TV show 1

  TV show 2

Documentaries

  Doc 1

  Doc 2

Otherwise to do spil level 2 you would want something like this

Media

Movies

   Movie1

   Movie2

TV Shows

   TV show 1

   TV show 2

Documentaries

   Doc 1

   Doc 2

correct, as this is what I have setup and it is working fine.
