May 25, 20242 yr Hi guys, Sorry in advance for my newbie questions... I'm very interested in buying a license and switching to unraid. But i have some questions... I have a server with 15 SSD drives and that's it. I do want something like parity to be protected by the failure of one or two disk. Basically i want performance and protection against hardware failures. I have a backup NAS with mechanical drives to backup all my datas. I read that i cannot use arrays because of trim with SSD but if i use pool i also read that i cannot have the hardware protection that i am looking for... Also... I need to use docker and vms, i read that i need to choose where to store them... I'm open to change a little bit my config by adding 1, 2 or 3 mechanical drives if needed. Any advice would be very helpful. Thanks
May 25, 20242 yr Community Expert I would recommend using the 15 SSDs with one or more zfs pools, they support TRIM and will perform better if you use raidz or striped mirrors, you can use an old flash drive for now to fulfill the current array requirement, and this requirement will go way in the near future.
May 25, 20242 yr Author Thank you for your quick reply, some people say that using unRAID without array and just pool is useless and that it is better to use truenas for this kind of usage. Only on the NAS perspective are you agree ? What i like about unRAID is basically all the ecosystem of apps vms docker and co. I don't want to just focus on the NAS thing.
