(UNRAID 6.12.10) Poor WAN speeds even with new NIC.

Good evening,

I'd like to start by adding that this is NOT regarding file transfers, but internet speed in general.

I've recently swapped hardware to a Dell PowerEdge R720XD.  The swap itself went well, but I am now left with an issue, wherein internet speeds through Unraid are painfully slow (fluctuating between 10-80mbit).  Speeds should be around 350-380Mbit.

I am a bit dumbfounded at what is going on.  Running a Speedtest in Docker using the SpeedTest-Tracker container returns a speed between 10-80mbit.  Running a speed test in my Windows VM whether bridged/passed through also yields the same results, Docker services are also achieving abysmal download speeds due to whatever is going on.

However, if I run a Speedtest in a FireFox container, it reports proper download speeds of 380Mbit.

I have tried resetting my Unraid network, swapped network cables, bypassed everything in my network by connecting the server directly to the LAN port on my modem, and tried swapping out the NIC, as well as attempting to use a USB NIC.  I've also verified duplex/MTU settings.  Regardless of what I do, or which NIC I use, this server refuses to achieve speeds greater than 10-80mbit.

I am clueless as to how everything in Unraid gets slow speeds, BUT the Firefox container reports the proper speeds.

I have attached a few photos.  1) ethtool report, 2) SpeedTest-Tracker Result, 3) FireFox Container Result.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Testing WAN speeds is not a simple thing.

It heavily depends on the connection to the external server you are testing too (I guess you have selected something in Tampa/Florida).

Likely this ist NOT your wan speed, but the uplink speed of your internet provider.

Look for a test host directly at or close to your provider. Only these results maybe valid. If this looks ok, its not your problem. You are just the victim of a lousy uplink.

If you are using a VPN connection, things will be worse, "speed" is not correctly measurable.

Sadly in the US there are no "reliable" switching centers like the DE-CIX we have here in Germany. This is a central backbone net with highest speed connectivities. Almost every provider is directly connected to it, limiting packet routings to the absolute minimum.

US is "home grown", "unplanned" and "always a surprise" when it comes to WAN speeds... be prepared for a surprise...

I appreciate the response!  However, running these same speed tests on any device in my network yields proper 380mbit speeds.  This server in particular is not able to achieve said speeds, regardless of any of the above troubleshooting steps I've taken.  I do use utilize OpenVPN in a separate custom Docker network for a few containers, but for the sake of troubleshooting, disabled Docker altogether, and saw no increase in speed.

As far as the 380mbit speed is concerned, it is all I've chosen to pay for, gigabit is available to me, but is not necessary for my use case.

I work for the ISP, and have verified this is not an ISP issue as well.

you may check the routing table to see if packets take an unwanted detour.

One common error is to assign default gateways to more than one ethernet interface and forget to check the preferences. So packets are send out wrongly, time out and are resend to the other gateway.
