Seeking Advice for Migrating Unraid Setup to New Hardware Configuration

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I am planning to migrate my current Unraid hardware setup to a new system. Since I am still relatively inexperienced, I am looking for support here and would like to clarify some points in advance.

Both setups are based on mini-PCs. In the current system, I have both the cache (pool) and array disks connected via USB, although I am aware that this is not recommended.

All my Docker containers and the virtual machine are stored on the cache.

The Backup/Restore Appdata Plugin also saves everything to the array.

Only some shares and photos are stored on the array.

The new setup will operate exclusively with SATA and M.2 connected hard drives.

Here are the details of the two setups:

Current Setup:

Mini PC
Model: Nipogi
Processor: Intel® Celeron® J4125 CPU @ 2.00GHz
Memory: 8 GiB LPDDR4

Pool:

  • Cache: CT500MX500 SSD1 - 500 GB (sdc)

Array:

  • Parity: Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB - 1 TB (sda)
  • Disk 1: Samsung SSD 840 PRO Series - 256 GB (sdf)
  • Disk 2: Netac S535N4 128GYN - 128 GB (sde)

New Setup:

Mini PC / Router:
Model: Topton X86 P5 Super Mini Router 12th Gen Intel N100 DDR5

Available Hard Drives:

  • A 2TB M.2 SSD (m.2 NVMe)
  • Samsung SSD 860 EVO 1TB (SATA)

Questions about optimal use of the hard drives:

I want to transfer all system settings, my Docker containers, plugins, and the virtual machine without having to set them up anew.

  • Is a cache (pool) absolutely necessary?
  • Do I need a parity disk?
  • Wouldn’t it be simpler to operate both SSDs as an array without parity? The backups are automatically transferred to another NAS and an external hard drive anyway.

Objectives and questions:

  • How can I achieve my goal in the easiest and fastest way?
  • Is the planned migration feasible?
  • Does this approach make sense?
  • Are there better options?

I look forward to your suggestions and thank you in advance for your support.
