Server not getting DHCP address after hardware swap

Featured Replies

Hi all!

I've been migrating my Unraid server from a Dell R710 -> my first custom build and everything went swimmingly until the first boot on the new hardware.

I can't seem to to get an IP on boot. I've attached the diagnostics from a boot with the original network.cfg from the Dell server, and one where I removed the file to try with the DHCP defaults. I seem to be having the opposite problem as @ArxKnight in this thread.

I've tried booting a fresh trial license of Unraid on a different USB device and was assigned an IP address no problem, this should rule out the NIC and the cables. Using this same network.cfg on the main server still fails.

Original Dell network.cfg:

IFNAME[0]="br0"
BONDNAME[0]="bond0"
BONDING_MIIMON[0]="100"
BRNAME[0]="br0"
BRSTP[0]="no"
BRFD[0]="0"
BONDING_MODE[0]="1"
BONDNICS[0]="eth0"
BRNICS[0]="bond0"
PROTOCOL[0]="ipv4"
USE_DHCP[0]="yes"
DHCP_KEEPRESOLV="no"
USE_DHCP6[0]="yes"
DHCP6_KEEPRESOLV="no"
SYSNICS="1"

I remember having to do some weird configuration to get this server up and running on the Dell hardware, but it was years ago and I was flying even more blind than I am now 😅

Thanks so much for all the help!

I would suggest that you check Ethernet cables and connections.  You do not have a link to switch/router detected.  I saw in the syslog that it selected an IBM 2.5G driver.

But I also did not see any evidence that eth0 was detected and set up.  I would have expected to find entries in the syslog with details about it when it was detected.

I just booted from my trial license USB and got an IP no problem, so that leads me to believe the cables/connections are alright.

I copied the `network.cfg` and `network-rules.cfg` from the working test USB to my main server USB and still don't have a connection, logs here: tower-diagnostics-20240617-2204.zip

I've also tried to book the main server into GUI mode to poke around, but it fails to launch. It gets stuck in a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left corner.

I am not an expert on the latest state of the various NIC drivers relative to when they were incorporated in the Linux Kernel.  You are running Unraid 6.12.10 in the trial license and Unraid v6.9.2 for second diagnostics in the post above this one.

What I would do is to pull the flash drive (that  does not work) from the server.

Plug it into your PC.  Make a copy/backup of that drive.  (Safety first!!!)

Download 6.12.10 from Unraid    https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/download_list/

Unzip that download.  Copy all the Files in the root of the zip file that begin with   bz   (bz*)  to the root of your boot drive.   Eject the drive from your PC.

Test and see if this fixes the problem.

Huzzah, that was it!!

Can't thank you enough, I don't want to think about how long it would have taken me to think of bumping up the Unraid version.

For posterity:
The motherboard was an ASUS Pro WS W680-ACE, IPMI card was not installed for the sake of troubleshooting.
