Replace a failing drive whilst the (valid) parity is reporting 300000+ errors

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Long time user but never posted before.

Currently I have 300000+ errors reported on parity and the last non correcting scheduled check ran at 150MB/s.

So I started running a manual correcting check but the speed was unbearably slow at 900KB/s and it would take 60+ days to complete.

I stopped it and ran a stress test on the discs to find out that disc 5 needs replacing.

My questions is:

Can I safely replace Disc 5 and rebuild it with a Valid Parity that reported 300000+ errors and then run a correcting check with the new fast drive?

I simply don't have the ability to wait 2+ months for the corrected check to finish, especially with disc 5 on it's last legs...

Please let me know your thoughts,

Many thanks!

Log is being spammed with a Samba related error, but the last parity check was canceled, reboot to clear the logs and post new diags after a parity check start if it's still going slow.

If there are uncorrected parity sync errors, it's not safe to replace the disk.

I rebooted the system, started a manual parity with corrections and it is still slow. Whilst the parity is still running I went ahead and downloaded a new daigs, please find it attached;

So the worst case is that I'd have to wait the 60 days for it to correct the parity and then replace the drive?

Also here is a screengrab of the disc test.

Parity check sped up! Hopefully it will keep the speed so I can report back in a few days once it is done!

Another option, if it slows down again, would be to copy the data from disk5 to other disks, since it's only 1.5T it should be much faster, then do a parity sync with the new disk.

Any idea why there are so many sync errors?

Okay so here are the results:

1st Parity WITH corrections - 300760 corrections made

2nd Parity WITHOUT corrections - 2 errors found

3rd Parity WITH corrections - 3 corrections made

Then I ran a DiskSpeed test with the following results:

It seems that Disc 5 is back up and running!

In temr sof why there were so many parity issues, I honestly do not know but looking at the History they have been there for a while (my bad, I'll pay more attention from now on) not sure why...

I do run Syncthing between 3 machines (work rig / unraid server / backup synologgy server) and they are constantly syncing. This maybe stupid to assume as I don't fully understand how parity errors are created, but syncthing sometimes creates ghost files as a file is being created which may cause the issue? Not sure.

My Unraid server is on a UPS which should shut it down gracefully in case of a powercut, so that's ruled out as a reason for parity errors.

I also attached the latest diagnostics, please do let me know if you find anything...

I need to copy a bunch of data now (about 0.5TB) and then I will run another Parity check WITHOUT corrections and hopefully this time it will come back with zero issues.

I won't replace the drive for now (at least I have a spare one now in case of an emergency) and will definitely keep an eye out for the system!

Many thanks for your help and guidance so far JorgeB, should you have any remarks after checking my diagnostics, please do let me know.

Have a good weekend!

This suggest there's a hardware issue, start by running memtest
