Cant boot after update

Featured Replies

After updating to 6.12.13 I encountered this problem. Probably is bad luck, but not sure what is the cause..

I did mention it in the release announcement in case this turns out to be a bug in that update:

Problem description:

After choosing Unraid GUI in the boot menu, it starts the Boot sequence.

The on screen log says these things:

waiting up to 30 sec for device with label UNRAID to come online ” .. “timeout”
usb usb1-port7: Cannot enable. Maybe the usb cable is bad?
usb usb1-port7: unable to enumerate USB device

usb 2-8: Device not responding to setup address.

not found - press ENTER key to reboot

I tested the USB stick on Windows: its fully readable. Mounts with "UNRAID" label. Checkdisk says no errors found.
"changes.txt" correctly shows "# Version 6.12.13 2024-08-22"

Photo;

As it happens at every reboot.

I shall try replacing the USB stick.

The topic linked below (similar boot issue) apparently was quite frustrating to pin down.

  • Some people found that some USB ports worked and some did. But eventually they all stopped working.
  • Some people RMA'd their motherboard, they suspected (or proved?) USB hardware was at fault and chips went dead.
  • Some people suspected VM crashing Unraid. (at the time of reboot, i suspect a VM was busy validating files in storage: PBS / Proxmox Backup Server)
  • Some people tried many USB sticks without success, and
  • Ultimately one person replaced the USB stick for a specific and completely different type was able to solve their boot problems consistently.

All of the above makes me wonder whether I now have a hardware issue.. I hope not.

Before replacing, try recreating the flash drive.

Thanks, I shall try recreating it. Steps found at https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/troubleshooting/boot-issues/#boot-failure

For what its worth , I am now using a "Samsung Flash Drive FIT USB 128GB" flash drive.

Any advise for a good USB flash drive (with GUID for Unraid) that is available in Europe is welcomed!

Why no USB stick (flash drive) on LimeTech shop?

I know this has been asked and answered many times, and I see LimeTech still does not sell USB disks.

I just want to point out that I would welcome a USB stick with a logo and preferably a LED activity indicator, like the old ones had. Miss those blinky lights, like the HDD activity on many PCs. Docs say that USB2 is better but its impossible to find today.

Personally I like the Sandisk Cruzer Blade 32GB, one of the few USB 2.0 flash drives still available, and in my experience they tend to be more reliable.

Solved, see below.

Things doublechecked first as well:

  • Different USB ports (including back and front panel)
  • Poweroff longer
  • USB ports work fine with other devices, e.g. USB keyboard
  • BIOS shows no problems
  • Boot sequence log always lists the USB brand and model (so it works to some extend) before having the problem.

and following https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/troubleshooting/boot-issues/#boot-failure

  • 4. Download the zip version of the release from Limetech and extract all the bz* type files over-writing those on the flash device.
    • same issue
  • 5a. Rewrite the flash device with a clean copy of Unraid (trial license)
    • THIS WORKED
  • 5b. Rewrite the flash device with a clean copy of Unraid and copy across just the key file from your backup to the config folder + the config folder
    • THIS WORKED also

So it is SOLVED by recreating the boot disk.

Thanks JorgeB!

As to the root cause: Not sure what caused this. Just my hunch.. but I suspect the busy VM had something to do with it.. right as I clicked REBOOT (after update) it occurred to me this was bad timing by me.

Looking forward to the new UNRAID 7.0 release for the VM snapshot features!! 🤩

This is odd.  I saw this same thing when upgrading to 6.12.12.  I have not attempted to upgrade to 6.12.13 yet.  In my situation, I used the flash backup to create a new flash boot drive on a different flash drive.  My server did not appear to see this drive at all, so I grabbed the original flash drive, that showed the same errors as yours, and moved it from the USB 2.0 ports to 3.1 thinking the USB 2.0 controller on the MB is possibly the issue.  This allowed the server to boot again, and I have even needed to power down once since and the server booted again without issue.  I still think it is the USB controller on my MB, but your post has made me a little less confident with my conclusion.

  • 3 months later...

I can confirm that changing usb port solved the issue (temporarily), which suggests that the fault is in the hardware usb controller.
