[solved] Hard Drive Mapping

Featured Replies

Before I released my unRaid server I did a test run/install. I then setup the parity and run a check.

I then added a hard drive and found that my coords were all other the place. So I undid all drives and re-mapped them inside the computer.

Unpon rebooting I found my array is dis-array and could not fix it. I had to completely reinstall the software and redo all parity.

My question is how does the mapping work? You can't just change the connection on the motherboard to hard drive. Why?

To that effect then if the motherboard ever fails your array is lost. Why is the mapping done this way?

It's not tied to the motherboard at all. You didn't do it right. You should have gone to the devices page and re-assigned the drives back to how they originally were assigned. The main page would have listed the new device and the expected device in italics for each disk. Just remove the wrong devices and then pick the expected devices. Once you had them all assigned the array would be all green and let you start again.

You must be running 4.7 because the new beta versions have changed the way the disks are recognized and they generally pick up the right disks no matter if they are moved or not.

Thanks Peter. I am running 5.0-beta14.

At the time I did try to do a reassignment but it didn't work unfortunately.

Any other suggestions?

No, I don't run the beta but I have read that moving the SATA cables has no effect on the setup.

To be clear, the array wasn't lost because your data would all still be OK. You just had to rebuild parity. Actually, from what I understand of the beta you have to do that when you upgrade.

This can be closed. I found the problem. Was a faulty extension power cable that connected the hard drive to the PSU. Was falling apart... It has been replaced and I have not had the problem since.
