[SOLVED] Preclear strange behavior

Featured Replies

I'm just putting together my first unRAID machine.  Attempting to preclear 3 disks.  2 of them worked just fine, but the third behaves very strangely.  Instead of giving me the usual update screens and email updates (although it did send me the "start" email and the first "25%" email), it just fills the screen with endless amounts of information (see the attached picture.)

Using Screen I started this drive (SDB) at the same time as another drive (SDC.)  They're the same size.  I got both of the 25% emails at approximately the same time, but since then SDC has finished and SDB still seems to be doing something, though I don't know what.  It's now been 12 hours since SDC finished.  I tried preclearing SDB a few days ago and the same thing happened, so I stopped it using Ctrl-C and restarted it.  Same results that are still going now.  Any ideas?

Did you first run Memtest on the system for at least 8 hours.  Leave it run overnight at the least and if possible for 24 hours.

Ah, no I didn't.  That wasn't in the tutorial I read.  Should I cancel out of this preclear cycle and do that?

I probably would.

I probably would.

I would also make sure memory is working.

If it is just the one drive, it is highly likely it could be just the one drive. (or the port it is connected to, or the cable used, or the cable is loose fitting)

Thank you both!  I'll run the memtest until tomorrow morning and see if anything crops up.  Then I'll check the cables and run it again.  It's a shame I finally got started on this after the hard drive prices skyrocketed.

The drive price hike hit most/all of us.  I would love to buy a couple more 2TB drives, but don't really need them.  I will hold off until absolutely necessary.

I noticed something that seems out of the ordinary in my list of drives on the management screen.  I'll post the screenshot here.  It looks almost like the drive that's giving me trouble is partitioned.  Am I reading that right?  If so, how should I procede?

Also I'll note that memcheck ran for 24 hours with no errors.

You don't need to do anything special.  Id does appear more and more that either you have a defective drive, or a power supply or cabling unable to supply proper power to it, or some other hardware issue.

I suggest a "short" smart test, followed by a smart status report.

Type

smartctl -t short /dev/sda

wait for it to complete (It usually gives an estimated time to complete the short test... usually 5 minutes or so)

then type

smartctl -a /dev/sda

and post the output.

If it shows the "short" offline test passed, then try a "long" test.

Type

smartctl -t long /dev/sda

wait for it to complete (It gives an estimated time to complete the long test... usually 5 hours or more, although recently I saw one drive estimate nearly 10 hours)

then type

smartctl -a /dev/sda

and post the output.

If the test is still in progress (you did not wait long enough), it will tell you in the status report.

Thank you!!  I'm just doing the short test now.  Is there a way of capturing the output so I can post it?  From a cursory glance through it, the only thing that stands out is this:

SMART Selt-Test log structure revision number 1

Num Test_Description_of_first_error:  #1 short offline, Completed: read failure  remaining: 90%  Lifetime(hours) 9471  LBA: 964453960.

Everything else seems to indicate PASS from what I can tell.

Ah, I worked out how to post the results.  Here we go.  Any insights?

Thank you kindly.

Both the long and short test failed when attempting to read the same block.

Offline data collection status:  (0x84) Offline data collection activity

was suspended by an interrupting command from host.

Auto Offline Data Collection: Enabled.

Self-test execution status:      ( 121) The previous self-test completed having

the read element of the test failed

SMART Self-test log structure revision number 1

Num  Test_Description    Status                  Remaining  LifeTime(hours)  LBA_of_first_error

# 1  Extended offline    Completed: read failure      90%      9471        964453960

# 2  Short offline      Completed: read failure      90%      9471        964453960

You could RMA the drive, or, attempt running "badblocks" on it and see if it can get that block re-allocated.

Thank you for the help!  Very much appreciated!  The HD went out of warranty a few months ago (of course.)  I'm trying to research badblocks to figure out how to use it.  Until then I'll keep the hard drive well away from the array.
