February 15, 201214 yr Hi guys- Looking into building my first unRAID server which will be used for storage, downloading and streaming. About the downloading bit, I wanted to know if Transmission uses the cache drive to download torrents? the reason I ask is to decide if I want to use a 64GB SSD or a 1TB 7200RPM drive for my cache. If torrents are downloaded to cache then I will need the bigger capacity drive but it not then I'll use the SSD. I prefer keeping default settings for apps and not tinker around- so it would be great to know where torrents are downloaded by default.

February 15, 201214 yr Author Thanks for your reply. Since I'm new to unRAID, what exactly is disk1? Is it a single physical disk or is it the first cluster than can be made of any number of disks?

February 15, 201214 yr Author Thanks again prostuff1- Few more question, and these are more UNRAID related than Transmission related. Can I chose which physical disk I want as disk1 or is it automatically assigned based on the order a drive is added to UNRAID. Also, can the cache disk be used as disk1? Lastly, when I create shares, can I chose which disks to span a share over? So for example, my media directory spans from disk2 onwards and disk1 only has downloads from transmisson.
February 15, 201214 yr Can I chose which physical disk I want as disk1 or is it automatically assigned based on the order a drive is added to UNRAID. You can assign whatever physical disk to whatever virtual disk (i.e. parity, disk1, disk2-disk20, cache) you like. Also, can the cache disk be used as disk1? No, they are 2 completely separate disks Lastly, when I create shares, can I chose which disks to span a share over? So for example, my media directory spans from disk2 onwards and disk1 only has downloads from transmisson. Yes, this can be accomplished through User Shares. You can read up a little bit on unRAID via the unRAID Wiki and the Configuration Tutorial.
February 15, 201214 yr Author Awesome- Thanks so much for your all your help. The awesome community gives me courage to move from the dumb drobo to the slightly perplexing UNRAID.
