February 25, 201214 yr I started transferring files from my whs to my unRAID using teracopy. The transfer speed is 5.5MB. Why is it so slow? I'm not using a wireless network. At this rate it will take me 7 days to transfer all my files. The unRAID server is on a different ethernet switch than my whs/pc but that shouldn't matter right?
February 25, 201214 yr Check the link speeds on those switches and report back what you find. When I did use Teracopy a noticed a performance hit too. It's been a while so I don't recall how much of a hit though. My raw copy process ran at 10 for a while until I put it all on a gige switch. Now I see 30 on the regular. To get better would mean a cache drive. Although files are not moved to their final locations until mover script kicks in late night in that situation.
February 25, 201214 yr Author Someone told me that it could be that unRAID is set to 100 mb/s and I need to switch it to 1000 mb/s. And the way to do that is installing unmenu
February 25, 201214 yr Author http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-ProSafe-Gigabit-Ethernet-Desktop/dp/B00006RVPW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330160625&sr=8-1 That is the switch that unraid server is hooked up to right now.
February 25, 201214 yr You mentioned 2 switches. What's the other one? Check the link speed. Don't assume they are working at gig speed. You can only be as fast as the slowest link. How fast is a copy without Teracopy?
February 25, 201214 yr Author Just did a test. Paused Teracopy and copied over a 18GB movie from whs to unRaid and I'm only getting 10mb/s. 5mb/s more than with Teracopy. This is still really slow. I'm using netgear gs108 switches around the house and a dlink dgs-2205. So not sure why I'm getting these slow speeds. My whs consists of a 4 bay HP MediaSmart Server with a 4 bay esata enclosure and a 4 bay USB enclosure. Also I transferred a 15GB movie from my PC to unRaid and only 11.2mb/s.
February 25, 201214 yr Author When you say check the link speed are you referring to the task manager on my PC then the networking tab? If so it says Link Speed is 100 Mbps. Which would explain the slow transfers.. How do I change it to 1000mb/s? And if i go into my WHS (HP MediaSmart Server) and click task manager, networking it says Link Speed 1Gbps My Mac Mini which is hooked up wireless says Link Speed- 54 Mbit/s My iMac is ethernet connected and says 100 Mbit/s
February 25, 201214 yr Someone told me that it could be that unRAID is set to 100 mb/s and I need to switch it to 1000 mb/s. And the way to do that is installing unmenu not true. you cannot switch it faster, unless you originally switched it lower from the faster speed.

It is automatically negotiated based on the network interface chipsets, the cabling between them. (and any cabling/switches and their respective speeds between them) Older cat3 cables only used 2 pairs. Cat5 cables do not meet the speed requirements of 1000Mb/s. You need cat5e or cat6 cabling, with proper jacks rated for the same speed. The wiring must be done according to the correct color-code standard. (The correct pairs of wires connected to the correct pins on the connectors) If using Treacopy, which confirms the copy was successful, you will get about 1/2 the normal speed, since it reads the file after writing it. 100Mb/s will equate to about 10 to 12 MB/s. (or 5 to 6MB/s if reading back files for verification)
February 25, 201214 yr Someone somewhere is not operating at full speed in your network. Please post your syslog. Also do a /sbin/ifconfig eth0 and post the results. Are you using teracopy ON the WHS or on a PC in the middle of the two servers?

If hardware is functioning normally and good drivers are installed you should operate at optimal speeds. I would connect the WHS server and the unRaid server on a gige switch alone. If the unraid server is a gig speed that's where I would connect the WHS box. The new link connection should auto negotiate a faster speed. Like this you can isolate the slower links speeds from the faster. You should be able to interconnect the 2 switches with a ethernet cable and maintain the speeds on each switch.

February 26, 201214 yr Author Is there anything specific I need to do to get gige speeds? My WHS is gige and I believe so is my unRAID server. As long as all cables and switches are cat5e I should get gige speeds? Is there anything I need to do in the settings to get these speeds?
February 27, 201214 yr Just confirm link speeds are as they should be. If you've put the servers on a gig switch and eliminated the middle man then it's time to give it a test. Don't use Teracopy just yet. Without cache you should see about 30. If you don't we've missed something.
