RE: unrecover These days I might recommend a used Dell E series laptop. They have eSATA port. Te E series dock also has an eSATA port. Note that it does not support port multipliers, only the first drive will be seen. In addition, an older used AMD based HP Microserver gen 10 might work since it doesn't require caddys. 4 Screws and slide in the drive. This is what I am using these days for network based backups and transitioning/merging smaller hard drives to larger hard drives. While the newer HP microserver gen10 plus is modern and powerful, I personally find it better for a set it and forget it unRAID server due to the delicate nature of front panel and external laptop based PSU. The older AMD based HP microserver gen10 is self contained and is better suited for frequent drive swaps. Even then I acquired a Startech external trayless eSATA device for making things easier.

I cannot remember the outcome in regards to reliability. If I remember correctly I retired it. There seemed to be weird issues with devices randomly dropping. I went with the 2 port Startech card ASMedia chipset.

Indeed. I suspect the third choice ("Auto") may eventually do what I had hoped it now already did -- i.e. use turbo write IF all of the disks were already spinning; normal write otherwise. My earlier post you referred to noted that this had been discussed -- I had hoped that v6.2 now had that implemented (but clearly it does not). But the presence of the third choice would certainly seem to imply that it may be coming :-) In my case, I want to manually control it via cron. It just makes sense for what I do all day long.

I use turbo-write via cron. Turn it on when I am most likely to use it all day long, turn it off at night around bedtime. For some it may make sense to turn it on/off during the mover as well. Using my server all day long to move mp3's and re-tag them, turbo write helps reduce the wait time significantly. Once there are reads and writes to the other drives, things slow down. Therefore it all depends on how a site uses a server.

Perhaps make it a plugin. Host it on github.

Perhaps reach out to [email protected] and see if he can compile it for the running kernel. Frankly, that's a pretty nice controller and probably too nice and/or advanced for unRAID usage. There's no telling if you'll be able to monitor it via smart. (check with your linuix mint distro and see if smartctl can access the drives individually) If the driver is not built in to unRAID, you're always going to be running into kernel vs module issues during an unRAID update. The simpler the better with unRAID. You can probably sell it for a good amount on eBay and get an LSI, flash it to it mode and be done.

Without a doubt. People need to know the status of the drive they are going to trust to reliably store data. Again, it should be reported. I don't know if it should say the drive is not healthy unless there is a FAILING attribute. If there are 'still' pending sectors, that would be an indication the drive is not reliable for unRAID.

I wonder if there's a way to update these images dynamically with php so that status messages or icons can be inserted / overlayed / updated. I think it could make a great lil dash board across the top that had icons for each drive and color related to health. While the current dash board is great, There's allot of information spread out. A table of drive icons across the top that represented different states that changed would be neat.

I just had success with the same reader (I bought it a couple years ago). Was able to remove a USB thumb drive, and activate this via unRAID's new guid process. This also allowed ESXi 6 to use the media without any reset messages. Thanks again Dan! Thanks for the heads up. Perhaps I'll jump aboard and get one of these as well. Although I've been going with the 64GB Sandisk Ultrafits these days. It's mostly due to size. Since I can replace it online without having to wait for someone, this eases my concerns a bit. I still think that dual keys one for licensing one for booting with configuration content is a good solution. The response received from this idea was that it would be a support burden.

FWIW, I thought these road sign examples might help. If we consider Danger, Warning, Caution, Notice, Safe then it may be clearer when choosing state colors.
