October 30, 20241 yr Hi all I want to leave Synology because of the high price for little hardware specs they have. I have got an old HPE rack server running Unraid now and wanted to ask for help, setting up the storage. I've read many forum and Reddit posts of various ages but I'm not sure how to set everything up. I'm keen to upgrade to Unraid 7 beta, if that makes sense. Disclaimer: I'm a beginner level user of Linux systems and total beginner with unraid. Please use easy words 😄 Here's the storage devices I got: 2x 1 TB Nvme on PCIE Cards 2x 14 TB HDD (second+ Hand, came with the server) 1-6x 8 TB HDD: 1 was spare for the DS and lives in the server right now, the others will get transferred from the DS, once storage can shrink there. What i want to run: On the DS, I've got everything containerized. I've got no experience using VMs, but i guess, running everything in docker containers is fine for Unraid too? Emby: Vast amount of data, writes can be slow, reads have to be fast enough to watch a movie. The media should no be unsecured but does not have to be secured while writing. Here i like the idea of the Array. Spinning up one HDD to watch a movie sounds nice. Is the Array fast enough to watch movies? Can i put the container on an Nvme and just have the media in the Array? Minecraft Server: Needs to be on a pretty fast storage i guess. Securing data is not top priority. A backup a day should be sufficient. Do i just put the container on an Nvme and back up the whole container to the Array once a day? Paperless + Cloud replacement for Synology Drive (something like Nextcloud) + Replacement for Synology Photos (immich) + Bitwarden + gitea: I guess those go in the same category. Frequent reads and writes, but not huge amounts of data. The data has to be protected at all times. These I don't really know how to set up properly... What I've done so far: I put the two 14 TB HDDs as Array parity disks. I like to have two, especially because the drives are used and there will be about 8 HDDs installed in the end I put the first 8 TB as an Array disk Made one Nvme as cache disk for the Array One Nvme as docker storage (maybe VM storage later if I get my head around those) My main concern is, those Nvme's are not protected and I cant put stuff like Nextcloud on there. Can I put the Nextcloud data on the Array, is it fast enough? I read, that Array cache and docker/VM should be on seperate Pool devices. Do i need to get another two SSDs so I can make pools of two disks for parity as cache and docker storage? Any help/hints are highly appreciated! October 30, 20241 yr Community Expert You don't have to have separate pools, and those have enough capacity to combine them for both purposes. Just make sure you don't fill them up. Don't cache initial data load.

Don't cache initial data load. Ok, I merged the two Nvme's to create one protected cache pool. Just to clarify what I think this means I need: - a share for docker mounts like emby media: Primary Storage: Array, Secondary Storage: None - a share for the containers: Primary Storage: Cache, Secondary Storage: None - a share for everyday docker data like immich: Primary Storage: Cache, Secondary Storage: Array Is this correct?
October 30, 20241 yr Community Expert When you enable Docker / VM Manager in Settings, default shares are created for specific purposes based on those settings. https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/manual/shares/user-shares/#default-shares
