Issue with data allocation

Featured Replies

Hi,

Just recently built a NAS and installed Unraid, using 4 18TB drives (one of them parity drive) I have 1TB SSD that act as cache drive.

Use the following setting on my share.  For some reason unraid disregard my share settings and keeps trying to write new data to disk1. Which has less than 500gb available. I´v tried changing from high-water to most-free, restarted the array but no difference. also tried excluding disk1 but no difference.  Very frustrating not to understand how to get unraid to allocated data logically.  Any tips or advice is much appreciated.

I would strongly suspect that is because of the Split Level setting you have an Unraid is obeying that setting.

In the case of contention between various settings for a share about which drive to select then the Split Level setting takes precedence.  This can force Unraid to try to write files to a drive that might not have space to accept it.

Thank you for clarifying that split level takes precedence—very helpful! I tested changing it to split level 3, and now it’s working as expected, with Unraid copying the file to Disk2 instead of Disk1, which has less than 500GB of space left.

Following this logic, I adjusted the minimum free space to 100GB, thinking Disk1 would now be available again, but Unraid still chose Disk2.

I’d like to fully understand this logic so I can configure my shares confidently, ensuring that Unraid only stores data on disks with enough free space.

On the other hand, what split level would you recommend for a movie storage share, optimized purely for file access?

Not sure why you would think that Unraid should immediately. start using disk1 again.   The allocation method would select disk2 with the current disk usage.

Have you read the section on User Shares in the online documentation accessible via the ‘Manual’ link at the bottom of the GUI or the DOCS link at the top of each forum page to understand the various settings?

There is no ‘right’ setting.    It is a personal preference on how data should be distributed.   If you do not have a view just use the default settings.
