Boot Errors Server Down

Featured Replies

Hi all, I have had unraid 4.7 working for a while now but today after booting I got the following error message.

VFS: Couldn't open root device "(NULL)" or unknown-block(8,1)
Please append a correct "root=" boot option here are the available partit
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root on unknown-block(8,1)

Can anyone help with what this means and where to go in fixing it without loosing my current drive array???

I searched the forum and the only thing I found was to run a chkdsk in windows which I did and the disk comes back normal.

Any help appreciated as I can not turn my server on.  :(

Okay just to add to this...

I put my USB key into my laptop and backed it up.

I formatted the USB key and did a new re-install of 4.7 to my usb key.

Put the USB key back into my server, rebooted and I got the same error message.

So I put the USB key into my laptop and booted of the usb key and the laptop boots fine.

So I tried another USB key, did a clean new 4.7 unraid install and same error even re downloaded the files from the site again.

So I am guessing it is something to do with the motherboard / memory????

I am running a memtest right now and it seems to be coming up with a tonne of errors not sure but its looking like bad memory.

If you've got errors reseat the ram and run another memtest. Worth a try although ram is pretty cheap. Me I'd rather use the loot on hard drives.  ;D
