SMART check questions from a new user

Featured Replies

Hey hey :) Im a new Unraid user, just started my trial.

For this occasion, i have bought 3x18tb drives from Seagate.

One of the drives arrived malfunctioning, so I'm returning it (having trouble with the local retailer which is evading warranty).

The two other disks work fine, altough making some spin up noise when powered intially.

I want to make sure they are healthy and were not harmed by shipping as well, since the first drive had a little bump on the plastic.

I ran a short smart self test and it returned as healthy, and my first parity sync was completed successfully as well.

I wanted to ask, is the "extended" smart self test suffiecient in your opinion to say they are healthy enough? Can i write data to the drives while testing or should i power off for that? It will probably take a long time because those are pretty big drives 😅

Thanks :)

If the parity check completed without errors, the disks are OK, since it's basically the same as running an extended test, but you can do one or two more to confirm, either parity check or extended SMART tests.
