NVMe cache drive failed - replacement drive needed?

Featured Replies

Hi y'all!

I'm a relatively lite Unraid user - running just media automations with ARRs & Plex, and Nextcloud.

And my Docker (1TB XPG 8200 Pro) started having issues after just 2.5yrs of running and I had to remove it and move docker to another pool.

So my first question is - is it normal for a Docker drive to die after just 2.5 years?

And the second one is - what should I replace it with?

I want to do 2x NVMe to have some redundancy, as it was a huge pain to get the docker data moved to a different pool when the drive's segments are failing 😅

I'm looking now at 2x 2TB Samsung 990 lineup and I'm not sure if "Pro" is necessary or can I go by with Evo or Evo Plus?

Or is there any better/cheaper drives I could run?

My motherboard has 1x PCI 4.0 x4 and 1x PCI 3.0 x4 M.2 slots, so I can't even run full PCI 4.0 speeds... But should I maybe get a PCI card maybe? And if so, which one?

This is the full setup I'm running:

CPU: Intel i7-11700

MB: Gigabyte B560M AORUS PRO

RAM: 32 GB DDR4

3x 8TB HDD for the Array - WD Red

1x 1TB NVMe for Docker and unprotected cache - XPG 8200 Pro

2x 1TB SSD for protected cache - Crucial MX500

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Usually Trim isn't enabled by default, which can be set up in the scheduler and in the options for the drive with autotrim. Not enabling it means the same sectors get used which causes degradation and early failure. So enabling those if they aren't will help a lot.

As for the new drives, performance is different between them but doesn't really matter a lot usually, same with PCIe, its more important how long they last, but that is for all models of the 990 the same, so the advertised difference is only speed.

If the docker-files themselves don't change a lot, you could also set them up, make a copy of the folder to the backup pool, but rename them so the cache-dockers are used, and if they fail, remove the cache and just rename the backup folder to the regular name.
