January 18, 20251 yr This is my first unRAID server and I am not a savvy with command line. I installed Unraid 7.0.0 and set it up with 6x24TB drives, built parity, and spent 4 days transferring data from my existing Synology setup. I recall those 24TB drives had about 170GB used when "new" which was expected from the reading I did (I can't find it again, probably from reddit, but expected 0.5% - 0.7% for whatever magic unraid uses on the disks). When I started moving over 20TB disks, and let Unraid format them xfs, this time I have 383GB used. This is a lot more that I expected and I was wondering: (1) Is this reasonable amount of unusable space for a 20TB xfs? (e.g. and why is it about double what I had on a larger disk?) (2) Is there any tool, function, etc. I can use to perhaps reformat or zero out these disks before I start using them. I did confirm they are not part of any shares and do not (yet) have any files, so my next step was to remove them and rebuild parity and try again, but I was hoping to save the time to rebuild parity to just end up where I am as before. These disks were Synology btrfs and encrypted, so I am thinking perhaps there are some partitions that didn't get cleared? (3) If so, is there a good way to clear that before I rebuild parity again? Thank you in advance for any hints --- and I will continue to search for answers. Edited January 18, 20251 yr by kkraiser spelling
