Proxy Server

Featured Replies

Did a search and found nothing. Is it possible to run a proxy server from unraid? That would be one of the last items i needed to fulfill to turn off my dependency on another server in the home.

thanks.. somehow i missed your reply. went to the tinyproxy webpage, tried to issue the different commands to install it with no luck (didnt think that would work anyhow) so how do i install this? download the *.tar file and unpack into a temp dir on the flash drive and then install?

sorry, total Linux noob here.

If you have openSSH installed you can create a dynamic proxy while connected to your unRAID server via SSH.

Lets try it another way around: What do you want your Proxy to do for you?

If we got that question clear than we might are able to help you choosing the right software for that.

If we have the right software we can look if there is an easy way of installing it to unraid, which might be hard because unRaid is based on Slackware and that is a bit different form Debian/Ubuntu etc. Its harder to find packages and it is not possible (without a bit of work) to compile packages directly under unRaid.

Use the OpenSSH plugin and use that as a proxy. I use it every day at work. A breeze to set up and connect to via putty and then enable your proxy. I use a Chrome extension that adds a toolbar button that makes switching between my proxy and a normal connection two clicks. Just do a Google search on how to use a proxy via SSH. Takes 30 seconds to set up.

I have a windows machine at home that is running CCproxy which i configure with Proxy Switchy chrome plugin at work. It uses rules to switch between my home proxy and the direct connection at work. That is the functionality i was hoping for. But i have used putty in the past to setup an SSH tunnel to home, but was trying to find something that did the latter first.

Just to cap off this thread, i did what mrow suggested. using unraid as an SSH server and initiating a connection on my client with putty and found that http://www.vpnsecure.me/support/chrome/ works great for a chrome plugin to auto switch according to rules. This way is more work because of the putty connection but then everything is encrypted so i dont mind.

Thanks all.
