ABIT AB9 PRO With 4 Memory Slots

Recommended Posts

Just a heads up for those who are interested in this board.

If you plan to max the memory for the current kernel, then go with 2x2GB PC6400 memory.

This will run the memory at DDR800.

I'm seeing once you put in two more memory sticks the memory speed drops to DDR533.

I noticed this when I enabled PAE in the kernel and added another 2G (2X1GB) to my already 2x2G PC6400 (for a total of 6GB).

I know both memory is PC6400 and from the same manufacture.

Seeing as this was the case I changed the 2x1GB to 2X2GB PC5400 I had lying around and the system still works fine in PAE mode.

So... if we wanted 4 gigabytes of memory at DDR 800, the only way to do this is by running 2x2GB PC6400, because 4x1GB PC6400 will not produce those speeds?

And if that is true... Then these would be excellent choices for memory on a new build?

$63.99 after MIR: OCZ 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 5-4-4-15

$66.99 after MIR: Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) 5-5-5-12

I know I upgraded the BIOS. It was the first thing I did.

I know I had the memory in the correct channels.

I know the memory was all PC6400.

It could be because I have more then 4G.

It could possibly be I have 2G chips in the A slots and 1G chips in the B Slots.

I'm going to order another matching PC6400 4G as 2X2GB and see.

All I know is I remember reading the board drops memory speed when you populate more then 2 slots.

Can't remember where it was. I forgot about it until last night.
