I Have Questions About Moving Files in Unraid

Featured Replies

Hello,
I’m a newbie who recently built my first NAS using Unraid. I have a few questions and would appreciate your guidance:

1. I used the Unassigned Devices plugin to move files directly from a USB drive to Disk1. However, these files are not visible in the shared folder accessed via SMB. How can I make the files moved directly to Disk1 also appear in SMB?

2. When I first set up the NAS, I mistakenly configured it to use the High-Water setting, which caused some files to be moved to Disk2. I’ve since changed the setting to Fill-Up, but I’d like to move the files currently on Disk2 back to Disk1.
I’m concerned that using the File Manager to move files from Disk2 to Disk1 might cause issues, such as parity problems or the files not appearing in SMB (similar to what happened in case 1).
Will there be any problems if I proceed with case 2?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Did you move them to a share? And if yes, is the share beeing exported?

Umm.. Let me explain my situation.

The Share folder is shared via SMB, and it consists of 21 disks.
There is an existing folder named Share\Movie\, and there is also a folder named Disk1\Movie\.
Using Unassigned Devices, I moved movie files from a USB drive to Disk1\Movie\ instead of Share\Movie\.
Should I have moved the files to Share\Movie\ instead of Disk1\Movie\?

P.S. For some reason, the files started appearing correctly in SMB after a few hours!
By the way, is it okay to move files directly from Disk2 to Disk1?

Yes it is ok to move file between 2 disk shares.

However you must never copy file between a disk share and a user share ( eg from Disk1/Movie to Share/Movie in your example) or vice versa;  if you do this you will end up with all the copied files being zero length.   It is for this reason that disk shares are not shared by default to help prevent users doing this.
