January 28, 20251 yr Hi Hope this is the right place. I just got a HBA and 6 18TB drives and having trouble deciding if I should just replace the drives in the current array or just replace the array with a ZFS pool. Unraid 7 running on a i5 13500 with 32GB ram, 2.5Gbit LAN. 6 8TB drives (1 parity) runnning of onboard controller, 1TB NVME cache. The data is 50% replaceable junk and 50% “can not be lost” (backed up offsite) I will be sticking with 6 drives for the foreseeable future so the benefit of expanding storage, like one would in an array is a minor benefit. Famous last words, I know… I’m planning on adding 10Gbe NIC down the line so the increased speed from the ZFS pool would be nice. Also adding another 32GB of ram. So just add the HBA and replace the drives in the array or go ZFS pool? If ZFS pool, go raidz2 or striped mirrors?Add a spare 2TB NVME I have laying around for L2ARC?
January 28, 20251 yr That's a choice that you should make, each one has advantages and disadvantages, main ones are mentioned below, it may help decide what is more important for you: https://forums.unraid.net/topic/131857-soon™️-612-series/?do=findComment&comment=1243850
February 5, 20251 yr My main issue with Unraid is the performance hit. If that wasn't an issue I'd be stilling with it but because of that I'm considering switching to zfs/pools. Not sure when I might make the jump.
