April 13, 201214 yr I have read all the linked posts / stickied / wiki'd stuff for RSYNC and added the files as best I can in the folders; but my QNAP will not talk to the UNRAID box. I am far too "dummy" to know what to do as diagnostics to see what I'm doing wrong. I just want my UNRAID box to be an RSYNC "target" (right language?) for backups of a few top-level shares. I am looking for a decent Windows RSYNC client now to see if it will give me better diagnostic feedback than the QNAP. Halp?
April 13, 201214 yr Are you just using rsync to initially load the server or is rsync a procedure you'd like to use repeatedly? This describes using a smb mount for a temporary rsync connection and how to configure the rsync deamon on the server as a more permanent solution: http://lime-technology.com/forum/index.php?topic=13432.msg127506#msg127506
April 14, 201214 yr Author I'm looking to use rsync to backup files TO the Unraid nightly (and/or more often). I have /tried/ to build the configs that are in that post - and the other rsync-referenced-posts in the wiki - but have been unable to get any successful rsync-ing between my QNAP and Unraid. Since I'm going from the QNAP (as well as Windows machines if/once I get this working), I'm looking for the direct network-based RSYNC, not the SMB-mount approach. I think part of my problem is that I'm unclear on the whole Linux and RSYNC stuff in general; then I'm confused by the multiple things I have to edit - which files go where? Finally, I don't know how to diagnose whether anything is working. Sigh.
April 14, 201214 yr Author Uh... HOLY SMOKES! I got it to work. Apparently, I was closer to success than I suspected. When I looked at the errors in the UNRAID syslog and the errors in the RSYNC backup log on the QNAP, it seemed like they were connecting and "speaking". So I went to the one thing that /always/ haunts me when it comes to Linux-based stuff: rights. I 777'd everything in the target on the UNRAID and it all started working. Wow! Gawd... I wish I understood the rights thing better - especially WRT Linux rights versus Windows stuff. A learning opportunity for another day, I suppose.... Thanks for your help!
