February 16, 20251 yr So I recently purchased an 8 port Startech controller to to expand my array. https://www.startech.com/en-eu/cards-adapters/8p6g-pcie-sata-card It actually worked ok for a couple days then I added a new parity disk and ran parity sync. After a while my first parity disk and one of the array disks would just completely drop out until i reboot. After much troubleshooting no matter what it would do this after a minute or two of rebuild. I went back to my original Startech 4 port (ASM1164) and now rebuilding original parity disk and seems to be running fine. Given that parity rebuild hammers all drives makes sense issues might not show up till now. Anyway from what I can see in comments and searches it looks like this 8 port card is really not recommended? Other comments about drives dropping out for it etc. The recommended controller page mentions port multipliers not sure if a PCIE MUX like this has is a port multiplier? Anyway just wondering if anyone can confirm this is likely expected behavior for this card and not worth the hassle before I got try return it thanks. I'm in NZ kinda hard to find LSI cards etc will likely just try exchange for an ASM1166
