Anyone run a large machine for local AI?

I've build some smaller custom servers with 24x bays, but now wondering about buying an off the Ebay shelf server with 512GB of ddd ram and chucking in a decent GPU for local AI work. 

Anyone else doing this? Is it worth it vs using online resources api's etc. Dont really want massive electric bill but if its just inference rather than training models it should be low wattage. 

 

Anyway what's your experiences?
