Can I boot UnRaid off a partition on nvme?

Featured Replies

I keep reading that UnRaid boots off a USB flash drive.

That is fine for an initial installation or recovery, but doesn't seem ideal for long-term use.

Can I create a partition on an nvme drive for UnRaid to boot from on an ongoing basis (hopefully not to often ;-)

Unraid OS doesn't run from the boot flash.

The boot flash contains archives of the OS which are downloaded when you install Unraid on the boot flash. These archives are not changed in any way as the system is used. They are only changed when a new version is downloaded.

The Unraid OS is unpacked fresh at each boot from these archives, into RAM, and the OS runs completely in RAM. Think of it as firmware.

The boot flash also contains all of your configuration (ALL settings from the webUI) and your license. These are applied after the OS is loaded. You must always have a current backup of your configuration.

Your license is tied to the GUID of the boot flash, so it must be used.

OK, that is certainly unusual, and maybe a bit risky but hopefully manageable.

I read the article on the drives and saw the video. I'll acquire the Samsung Bar Plus.

I will plug it into a 6" USB Extender to reduce the risk of it getting snapped off since it will be left plugged into the server.

Even better would be to plug it in to a USB port inside. Many motherboards have a place to plug in USB ports besides those on the back.

I have one of these in each of my servers.  I find using the cable allows my to secure the flash wherever it is best out of the way inside my case.
