Upgraded to 7.0.1 - Iron Wolf Pro 14TB periodic read errors leadign to disabled disk

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Since upgrading to 7.0.1 from the rock stable 6,x branch one of my IronWolf Pros (off of an LSI 9207-8i in IT-Mode /w 40mm Noctua @ ~2k RPM) is getting read errors and going disabled, requiring removal and rebuild.

I've explored and applied the spinup changes advised below but they didn't resolve my issue (last night was the second time the read errors disabled the drive.

I didn't have any issues with it prior to upgrading to 7, and an extended SMART test returned no issues.

I've uploaded the diagnostic, any assistance will be greatly appreciated!

It didn't happen after a spin up, so it's not that issue, and it's not logged as a disk problem, try swapping both cables/slot with a different disk and see where the issue follows.

Will do, and I just checked and this is a re-certified drive from SeaGate as I had to replace the 14TB I bought because the sata connector snapped. I'll do a full rebuild as-is, and after that's done I'll move the cables around and watch.

Opinions on if I leave the spin-down timer to disabled as a precaution? Or can/should I put it back to default?

Thanks!

You can leave it while you test, but like mentioned, this time at least that wasn't the issue.

The same disk went disabled this morning, even with disk sleep turned off. I'm thinking the disk might be shot, so I'll do one more rebuild with it and move everything important off of it, do a zero pass/pre-clear and RMA it with Seagate. I'm a little nervous because I have two of these ironwolf drives, so fingers crossed that just the one is a lemon.

So I removed that disk from my array so I could pre-clear it on RMA, and it passed 1 pass of pre-clear just fine, and I'm running another extended SMART.
